What's Spinning

Was reading a bit of The House that Trane Built today and they have a 2 page spread throughout the book about a particular Impulse album with comments from the artists/producers etc. This album was recorded at the Village Vanguard and Danny Johnson is a Painter not a musician , but Keith basically told him to play bells and chimes at the gig so he sort of sits in the back and jingles away .BD94343E-C5FB-4D36-9ADE-B7ED032C9FE1.jpegECDBDC01-5F8F-4311-AED4-9B47946DE08D.jpeg

Gotta say I was a bit underwhelmed by this on first listen a month or so ago, gonna give it another spin as these J- Jazz reissues have been some of my favourite purchases over the last couple of years, so maybe I was mistaken!??! Topology.AF5A6C92-3274-4E0A-9B90-0DDE9540567A.jpeg
Yeah, except the 1st track which is on the comp and the last track, this is a bit boring for me, for people that have Animal Garden , what do you think? I don’t really want to spend money on something I won’t listen to, I need Excitement !!AF5A6C92-3274-4E0A-9B90-0DDE9540567A.jpeg

Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba - Miri

I'm playing through my roughly top 20 favourite records of 2019 to come up with some kind of definitive(ish) ranking. This is actually in about 17th place before the listen but with the kids home rap and raucous jazz are probably out! This sounds mighty fine and is up there with his best album (Jama Ko for me, before this). He got some attention on previous albums for electrifying his Ngoni giving the fairly basic instrument a sounding rather like some kind of Malian Jimi Hendrix. But on this album he went back to acoustic basics, and it's gorgeous.
