Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Whatever this upcoming “essentials” pick is this month, an obscure late 60’s private press psych record is something that would definitely be right up my alley. That being said I will likely swap just for a value play. While I personally appreciate the genre exercises that VMP sometimes release. I have learned the majority of their members do not and will likely be able to pick up September’s release on Discogs come December for like $12.

I finally gave in and listened to a couple tracks from The Shaggs. The amount of discussion we’ve already dedicated to this is laughable, and I know that’s true because I’ve been laughing.

If VMP even put it in the store I think they should get sent on tour like Tabakin.
You just planted the seeds for a Tabakin/Shaggs supergroup!

The story of how The Shaggs came to be is all kinds of interesting, and listening to Philosophy of the World in that context adds to the intrigue. It's not good, but there is a fundamental reason why it's not good in that it is totally free from the conventions that music exists within.

That said, I'd be absolutely hard pressed to believe that VMP would do this. A small run exclusive? Sure. RotM? Naw.

VMP may as well make pornstar Farrah Abraham's "My Teenage Dream Ended" an Essentials ROTM as it also has a strong cult following like The Shaggs' "Philosophy of the World". My Teenage Dream Ended is an easily misunderstood album and the album in recent years has been viewed as a masterpiece and ahead of its time. But, this Farrah Abraham album would be so unbearable for most VMP subscribers to listen to. That's how I feel about The Shaggs. I know the ROTM won't be The Shaggs but I just want to further express my feelings because I'm a child 😂😂😂

I’ve always said that if this album was released by Crystal Castles it’d be topping lists for best album of 2012. I always laugh when people try to posit Angelic 2 The Core and Philosophy Of The World as misunderstood avant-garde masterpieces, but this twisted ass album is one I could feasibly see an argument for

This album sounds cool and I did sort of like it but once again, I don't feel like I need it in my collection
Im just gonna say it, it’s not essential.
I honestly don’t even have a desire to stream it again.
Hoping it’s not this as well.
What a miss for the psychedelic rock category.

It’s more exclusive album material, imo.

I think the "free from conventions" talk is bologna. That's like saying you jumped out of a sky scraper to show you were free from the conventions of gravity... Free indeed!

Some jazz that "breaks the conventional rules" while still making great sounding music is an example of actual execution of this idea.

All the Shaggs are is a cool story and a collectible item. ( there is more than one version of the story too) I get some would like the record based on these items alone. I just don't buy the many theories on why it's intriguing music.

Shaggakin sounds like the Travelling Wilburys of odd.

Not sure where I sit with Top Drawer. First song is pretty cool, especially when the guitar comes blaring in. But I sort of lost interest a few songs in. Sort of lost that “psychedelic” feel for me.

Another vote for The Shaggs?

Yeah this Top Drawer album should be something I would be all over but it just doesn’t do it for me. Kind of hope it’s not this.

And is The Shaggs instead?

Unlike The Shaggs?

Top Drawer bad. Shaggs so bad it nearly touches back to good on the scale.

My pal's name is Foot Foot (Foot Foot)
He always likes to roam
My pal's name is Foot Foot (Foot Foot)
I never find him home
I go to his house
Knock at his door
People come out and say
Foot Foot don't live here no more
My pal Foot Foot (Foot Foot)
Always likes to roam
My pal Foot Foot (Foot Foot)
Now he has no home
Where will Foot Foot go
What will Foot Foot do
Oh, Foot Foot
I wish I could find you
I've looked here, I've looked there
I've looked everywhere
Oh, Foot Foot
Why can't I find you?
Foot Foot, where can you be?
Foot Foot, why won't you answer me?
Foot Foot, Oh Foot Foot
Wherever you are
I want you to come home with me
I don't have time to roam
I have things to do
I have to go home
Oh, Foot…
