Upcoming/Recent Shows

Went out on a last minute decision to see yeule in Portland last night. Also stopped by the record store just across the street (Blackwater Records) from the venue which I have been in once before; they specialize in hardcore punk and metal. I did walk out with a surprisingly cheap LP, and took it to my car before waiting in line to get through the venue doors.

SASAMI

I listened to SASAMI's Squeeze from last year which didn't resonate much with me. I kind of felt the same way about her opening set here. She had no accompanying musicians, just her vocals and a laptop on a swivel chair for backing track. She also alternated half on, half off guitar at times. I found her stage personality to be rather charming, sassy, and playful...even if her attempts to hype the crowd didn't have us jumping around for much longer than 10sec at a time.

yeule

A much improved performance from last year's Portland stop. SASAMI returned as guitar support as well as a live drummer, who played both kit and drumpads. Just under an hour set including encore.

The night ran for 13 songs in total, playing songs from both last year's Glitch Princess and last month's softscars, which marks an intriguing and rather noisy change of direction for yeule's music. They played guitar for roughly half the set much like SASAMI did with her set, not just during the "Don't Be So Hard on Your Own Beauty" solo guitar performance from last year (they also performed this yesterday). They even had some screamo moments near on the last few songs of the main set, like on "x w x."

Gotta say, "Bites On My Neck" went just as hard as last year if not more. Live drummer really elevates the volume, and both SASAMI and yeule dancing around, a total vibe. It's like if EDM had drops that warranted the buildup. One of my favorite pop-adjacent songs of the 20s.

Overall, enjoyable night. Still not convinced that yeule is excellent live, but this was a much better excursion.

Went to All Things Go over the weekend. I'm too old for festivals, but I keep going to this one.

Got to see a pretty cool show last night. Beck did a one-off performance in Orlando with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. I've never seen him before, and haven't really followed much of his recent work, but it was excellent. He played a lot from Sea Change and Morning Phase (an album which, at the time, just seemed like a lesser version of Sea Change to me). He also did "We Live Again" and the orchestral version of "Jackass" from the Odelay deluxe version. Two Scott Walker covers as well!

This was at the Dr. Philips Performing Arts Center, supposedly "one of the most acoustically perfect spaces in the world" No photos were allowed during the show, but I did manage to get a shot beforehand:

The past few days felt kind of snobbish, what with one show being at Radio City Music Hall and the other two events being a part of a festival put on by The New Yorker. But still, it was so cool seeing Japanese Breakfast headline a sold out Radio City and then two days later seeing Michelle being interviewed by a staff writer at the New Yorker followed by a brief performance backed only by a string quartet. Furthermore, getting to be in a relatively small room to see Paramore perform a four song set (compared to the arenas they've been touring in) and then spending an hour listening to them being interviewed live was such a treat.

U2 at Sphere Las Vegas, Oct 5 2023

This was such a stunning show, pics do not do the venue justice. And visuals aside, it was one of the best sounding shows I've ever seen.

So glad that you loved it!!
Seriously debating going. I don't want to waste all that money if I can't handle it due to motion sickness (U2:3D in IMAX was nearly unbearable) but Achtung Baby is my all time fave album and this place looks insane.

My girlfriend had to look away a couple of times but they do a good job of not overdoing it with the visuals - some songs they go all out but there are just as many songs with a pretty plain background like this

Ohana Festival Day 1 - 9/30

A couple of shows behind on my reviews. Trying to catch up.

Excellent festival as always . Got there a little late in the day on Saturday, so our first band was Lucius on the smaller stage. Perfect start to the day with some great grooves and harmonies. They came out into the crowd for the last song of the set. They turned out to be the MVP's of the day coming out to join both War on Drugs and Eddie Vedder during their sets.

IMG_3509.jpegIMG_3524.jpeg

Next up were Goose, who were better than I expected to be honest. While I love the Dead, I find that I steer clear of most of the jam-adjacent bands otherwise so this was my first exposure to them.

After that was War on Drugs who I was happy to get on the rail for. Solid set from them, and having Lucius come out to sing the chorus on "I Don't Live Here Anymore" was the icing on the cake. Also props to their drummer for repping Earthless in his choice of clothes.

The Chicks were next and got the crowd going. Not 100% my cup of tea, but no there is no denying their abilities and history. Eddie and Natalie had done a few duets in the past, was surprised that they didn't interact at this festival.

Eddie Vedder closed out Saturday as always with the Earthlings as his backup band for the third year in a row. Wasn't initially thrilled with that again, but Paul McCartney's Drummer - Abe Laboriel - filled in for Chad Smith and brought a TON of energy to the show. Some new covers in the set too - One and Just Like Heaven worked unexpectedly well. All in all a great day. Sunday review coming soon.

Ohana Festival Day 2 10/1 - Dana Point CA

First act of the day was one of the ones I was really looking forward too and she didn't disappoint. Lido Pimienta was jaw dropping in a way too short set with modern electronic beats mixed with columbian rhythms. Would love to see a full show from her.

IMG_3628.jpeg

Suki Waterhouse was up next. As we were commenting on her vocal similarity to Mazzy Star, she dropped into a bit of Fade Into You. So apparently she's heard that too. Nice lo-fi set for the afternoon.

Walked around the grounds for a bit after that and got a chance to meet Josh Klinghoffer who was out in the crowd. Made it back for the first show from Deaf Charlie, Jeff Aments latest side project. Abe from Paul McCartneys band came back out as the MC for this fun set that was decidedly different than Jeff's Pearl Jam sound.

IMG_3674.jpegIMG_3671.jpeg

Crowd up front was getting pretty packed at this point, so we made the strategic decision to move to the back of the festival. Pretenders were up next and were totally worth the wait since they were initially on the lineup during the covid-cancelled Ohana. Chrissie's attitude, look, and voice were spot on. Wouldn't have thought she was 72, one of my favorite sets of the weekend.

IMG_3706.jpeg

Foo Fighters closed it out in typical Foo energy. Highlight was Aurora dedicated to (and co-written by) Taylor Hawkins which was a nice emotional end of the show / weekend.

Thanks for the tip on Lido Pimienta - I'd not heard of her, but digging what I'm listening to now.

Saw Alice in Chains on Tuesday in Vegas. Never saw them with Layne but William Duvall heads them up nicely and Jerry was great. The opening group, Royal Thunder, was also pretty good.

The floor was awesome. Lots of room to move around, since they were more expensive than the seated area and people seemed inclined to buy the less expensive tickets.

The woman visiting me really appreciated the show 'cause she hasn't been to many rock shows and loved the intensity. Plus my buddy and his wife who we were with are good company at a show. And with using Uber we were able to go stupid with overpriced booze!!!

Saw Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times Of The Temptations today. Part of our Broadway series. What a fantastic show!
Some interesting things that I didn’t know, like War was originally written for them but Gordy didn’t want them to go political and ruin their appeal.

Was this at Smith Center?

Yes. We’ve had season seats since 2019.
Tomorrow is the last day, if you can go, you should. All the performers are fantastic as well as the musicians.
Nice, I've only been there a couple times but I figured that show is in their wheelhouse.

I check out their calendar every now and again for classical music. I'm no aficionado but Ive seen live classical music in the past and even if I don't have a strong foundation, I enjoy it.

I think the symphony season is starting soon or has started. I think we’re going to try and go see Rhapsody Blue.

We don’t go to all the shows in the series, which helps keep down the price a bit.
Every time I step foot inside, I’m thankful for that building. I feel like it gives the city a bit of respect because it’s not attached to a casino.

Lol. I'm sure someone has suggested it.
