The Sound of Science - audiolab 6000 Series and beyond!

I have it connected to my 6000A and it has noticeably improved the sound quality. For a small unit it has had a big effect.
My wife wonā€™t be thrilled about me buying another ā€œboxā€ but it looks like it should arrive early next week at the latest!

Do either of you use a power conditioner over your entire system? I found that made a huge difference to mine. Iā€™ve never experimented with a dedicated DC blocker because Iā€™ve not had transformer hum but the conditioner was an upgrade Iā€™d highly recommend!

I have a Panamax on one of my setups. May move it to my main once I get a proper cabinet for all my gear!

No I haven't but Jason swears by them. Which one are you using? As for the DC blocker, not only does it eliminate the irrating transformer hum but it also reduces heat dissipation by the power supply, not to mention it tightens the bass reproduction and enhances the dynamics.

Iā€™m using the PS Audio Dectet. Itā€™s great but itā€™s expensive and itā€™s had a big price hike since I bought it. I went with it over other choices because I trust the brand and 10 outlets comes in handy as opposed to the 6 on the ifi one which was my other main contender.

We are a bit more limited in choice in 240V land, there is much more value over there in 120V land, Iā€™d probably have gone with something similar to a Panamax like Mike had that kind of option been available over here.

It really does make a huge difference, I was prepared for snake oil and it was the opposite, it really did cull background noise to give a really nice black backdrop. Plus the peace of mind that your gear is protected from power surges or dips, as you start to spend more on the gear thatā€™s definitely a good thing to have!

Ha! Those are definitely not cheap. $900 CAD to be exact but from what I understand they are fantastic. One of the best AC power conditioners on the market.

Yeah itā€™s $750USD and Ā£800 from the UK store I bought it from. I will say that the list, and what I paid, in February 2020 was Ā£500! It is a really good unit though, very happy with it, does everything it needs to really well and itā€™s built like a tank!

When youā€™re talking about conditioners though it really is the tip of the iceberg and the entry point into specialist hifi ones, itā€™s a very deep and very expensive hole to fall down if you so wanted!

Calculators arenā€™t cheap enough for himā€¦

Also was he really drunk when he made that video?
Alcohol AND drugs is my guess. Not that I would know anything about either of them. šŸ‘
Can we be sued for libel saying such things on a public forum? šŸ¤·

CDT just arrived. What's generally preferred, optical or coaxial connection?

I prefer coaxial because a good quality coax is generally better shielded and I prefer the RCA style connection it makes. From a sound quality point of view coax supports 24/192 and toslink optical 24/92 so as both of those are above the CD quality of 16/44 it isnā€™t that big a deal.

You wonā€™t have transformer hum because your PL has a DC blocker circuit built in. Itā€™s the first thing the electricity goes through inside your amp.

Effectively, you already have the Audiolab DC Block. Audio by Van Alstine (AVA) makes the same thing as the Audiolab for the same price as well.

Thatā€™s good to know! I didnā€™t have it on the Quadā€™s either so it was never really a black hole that I explored!
