BOC in someone else's top 50!!

I need to try to get into Third again. I loved Portishead's previous albums but this one didn't sink into me as much. Solid Gorillaz Favorite!
I can see why someone who liked the first two Portishead albums may not like Third as much, it deviates quite a bit from their trip-hop roots and is more influenced by things like psychedelic rock and experimental electronic music. That said, the fact it is so different, not just from other Portishead albums but really from any other album I've ever heard, is part of what makes it such an amazing piece of work to me. It gives a very unique experience and really just brings you into it's own world. It can be both beautiful and heartwrenching, as well as terrifying and claustrophobic, sometimes at the same time. It's hard to explain why but it strikes a chord with me very few albums can manage to.

I like it a lot. 😄

i need to listen to third

and though i get a lot of people LOVE be the cowboy, i just found it a little disappointing, i dont feel as connected to it as i was with puberty 2 or bury me at makeout creek, still great but not in my top 50
personal bias comes in *big time* will Be the Cowboy... at the end of 2018, I went through a very very rough period which included (among other shitty things) a really bad break-up with someone I loved a lot... if not for Be the Cowboy being there to help me get through that, I genuinely don't know if I would have been able to make it out of 2018 in one piece 😓 so I admit that it's so high up due in part that it's one of the few albums I can say probably helped actually save my life. It gave me solace and comfort at a time where I was at my lowest point and I will always love it for that 💙

I saw Portishead on the Third tour, amazing voice but she spent most of the Set with her back to the audience

Time for the second half:
25) Daft Punk - Discovery [house]
Daft Punk - Discovery - album cover

A litany of clever usages of samples on an electronic album are found here. Nearly two decades old? Seriously? Throw this on at a party and the joint will still come alive. An hour of tunes to let go and free oneself to dance without worry. "Too Long" is not long enough.

24) Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯A♯∞ [post-rock]
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - F♯A♯∞ - album cover

Thanks to 2020, this album rings a different tune, doesn't it? The hopeless, oppressive, and grim atmosphere is palpable from the introductory swelling droning. Of course, that apocalyptic spoken word monologue holds pertinent.

"...The government is corrupt
and we're on so many drugs
with the radio on and the curtains drawn..."

23) Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas [dream pop]
Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas - album cover

Dream pop doesn't get any dreamier/hazier than this. Blissful distortion. A shame that this group abruptly disbanded after this album was released, although Elizabeth Frazier makes an occasional feature from time to time.

22) PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea [singer/songwriter, indie rock]
PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea - album cover

The most sonically diverse of her records, the most accessible, and (in my opinion) the most engaging.

21) Deafheaven - Sunbather [black metal, shoegaze, post-rock]
Deafheaven - Sunbather - album cover

I can confidently say that this is the only album that I have: headbanged to, slept/napped to, studied to, cleaned to, listen to at work, and taken walks to. The worlds of metal, shoegaze, and post-rock collide to create something so genre-bending and overwhelming while sustaining a rather uplifting, alluring instrumental. I still don't understand the screamed lyrics, but it matters not: they enrich the pummeling kickdrums and guitars throughout the record like a dream.

21 and 25 are amazing

I disagree that the last song of that album isn't long enough though (and actually there aren't that many samples on the album), I listened to it on a car ride and me and my dad both thought "wow this is long"

I'm almost positive that my #1 won't be on anyone else's list, but it's an underrated masterpiece. Also, I feel like Remain In Light perhaps won't end up being #1 on the compiled list, but might be the album that pops up on the most amount of our own personal lists. This has been a blast, and I love seeing everyone else's lists!

This has been an extremely frustrating experience, but I finally nailed it down to fifty. Finally decided to just go very personal and choose the albums that has meant a lot to me In various stages of my life, and then rating them based on how much I still enjoy them. So a few that seems a bit left field. And I grew up through both the late 80s metal/punk scene and the early 90s alternative boom, so that reflects it all pretty heavily. Top 3 are basically the albums I've listened to most throughout the years, and that I never seem to get tired of.

Getting closer...
20) 2 8 1 4 - 新しい日の誕生 (Birth of a New Day) [ambient, vaporwave]
2814 - 新しい日の誕生 (Atarashī hi no tanjō) - album cover

You are transported to a cybernetic world with splendor and progressivism. The grandeur of the ambient tones on this record imparts the backdrop of an urban city or civilization that never sleeps. The experience is like gliding through the city at night until daybreak on the final track. I have yet to come across another vaporwave record that transports me to a similar state of utopia.
And yes, I still resent the term "vaporwave."

19) Portishead - Dummy [trip hop]
Portishead - Dummy - album cover

Trip hop cornerstone. Self-explanatory inclusion.

18) Radiohead - In Rainbows [art rock]
In Rainbows - Wikipedia

Still holds up as my favorite Radiohead record and not much more, if anything, needs to be said that others have communicated.

17) Joe Henderson - The Elements [spiritual jazz]
Joe Henderson & Alice Coltrane - The Elements - album cover

My foundation into discovering a more innovative and colorful approach to jazz beyond the widely accessible modal and hard bop subgenres. Henderson and Alice Coltrane team up to compose four tracks named after literal elements (fire, air, water, and earth) to take the listener on an international excursion. It is fair to say that this record alone is the reason I have jazz records outside of the legendary and more familiar Blue Note and Columbia labels.

16) Angel Olsen - My Woman [singer/songwriter, indie rock]
Angel Olsen - MY WOMAN - album cover

Angel was my introduction to the female singer/songwriter canon. Her distinctive voice projects a vintage sound from an era long past. On this particular record, I find the subtle and effective subgenre blending from a dreamy synthpop introduction, transitioning to a indie rock middle, then once more transitioning to a dreamy rock music back half to be striking.

51. Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved A Man the Way I Love You (1967)
52. Kacey Musgraves - Same Trailer Different Park (2013)

54. Otis Redding - Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul (1965)
55. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (1965)
56. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (2000)
57. The Game - The Documentary (2005)
58. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats - Tearing at the Seams (2018)
59. The Used - The Used (2002)
60. Jason Mraz - Waiting For My Rocket To Come (2002)
