The N&G Top 500 Albums of All Time!!!

I thought I felt the same about #1 but the more I think about it the more I realize that my musical tastes are just not as diverse as I’d like them to be. A lot of music discovery is coming late for me ( I really didn’t even give Jazz a chance until I started hanging out here). I’m finding a lot of it very enjoyable, and I have you all to thank for that, but it’s still so new to me that I can’t rank it in a top 50.
My list is definitely not diverse. My list of 50 is probably going to be 75% rap & 20% soul/R&B (which looks like it makes me an outlier here). My 100 would be only slightly more diverse. We like what we like, can't really force it 🤷‍♂️. Most of the jazz that I like is funky or fusion, and none of it will make my list (unless you consider Gil Scott-Heron or Esther Phillips jazz). And I've gone through phases in my life where I've really gotten into classic rock, pop, more modern rock, etc but very few of it would qualify as my favorites.

Seeing talk of genres and decades had me curious, so instead of revealing my list already, I decided to reveal the stats for my list. Pretty heavy recency bias on this millennium haha

I listed 55 albums because I'm torn on how I'm going to submit my list for this. I have my top 100 already put together, but I doubt that anyone else is going to vote for those 7 Emo/Pop Punk albums that show up in mine (huge albums for high school me that I still love today). And 51-55 are all classics that stand a chance to be on many lists. I'm thinking of taking out 5 of those albums that I'll be the only one to vote for to put these albums in, but I'm still not sure.

Also, for the record, I have quite a few comps and greatest hits in my list 🙈🙈🙈 haha

My list will probably be even more one-dimensional. So far it’s looking like 1 jazz, 1 soul/R&B, and the other 48 will be rock/pop (though I’m including things like Björk in that category).

Oh man, now I'm dying to know what that soul album is!haha

I'll tell you. It's Allen Toussaint - From a Whisper to a Scream. Specifically this version, which changes the track list (and title) of the original album so that Side B is all instrumental songs. The Meters are his backing band. Absolutely one of the best things I've ever heard.

@Woob_woob if it wouldn’t be too much trouble would we be able to get “honorable mentions” for albums that were on more than 1 persons list but didn’t make the cut?

For example, if 3 people put an album down as their 45th favorite album it would only be 15 points and probably would not make the top 500.

Hell yeah, Toussaint is awesome. Esther Phillips covers a couple of songs from this on her album From A Whisper To A Scream. It's in my top 50.

I've never listened to this, but I'm adding it to a playlist now to listen to. Thanks!

Maybe? Probably not tho. I feel like a list of 500 should cover enough, but if something really sticks out maybe

So I have 50 now. I might want to tweak with the order before I reveal all, I think I might do a reverse play through on Insta for my reveal, cross posting here in groups of 10 might be fun...

Anyway here’s a list of considered ones that didn’t quite make the grade. The near misses if you will. This isn’t exhaustive and of course there may well be some Beatles, Dylan, Bowie, Radiohead, etc. ones that come higher but I’ve only included the odd bigger one by those artists here as they are well represented in my top 50 and regurgitating their discography is no fun for anyone.

So, in no particular order, my honourable mentions are:

The Beatles - Revolver
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not
Arctic Monkeys - AM
The Band - Songs From Big Pink
The Clash - London Calling
Buzzcocks - Love Bites
Tom Waits - Mule Variations
The War On Drugs - Lost in the Dream
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Travelling Willburys - Volume 1
Super Furry Animals - Fuzzy Logic
Morrissey - Viva Hate
Morrissey - You Are The Quarry
Nirvana - In Utero
The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Idlewild - Hope Is Important
The Coral
Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run
The Stone Roses
The La’s
Suede - Dog Man Star
Prince - Sign “O” The Times
Prince - Purple Rain
Pulp - Different Class
Elastica
Joni Mitchell - For The Roses
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R
At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command

For posterity London Calling can be taken off this list and Amy Winehhouse’s Back to Black can be added to it....

I just want to make sure of this before I do my list. The list we are giving @Woob_woob will be just, copy pasted or is it on something fancy like excel? Because I don't have a computer so that last one may be tough lol.... Oh, also, should I add the points next to the album/position or that will be tallied later?

I'm going to start soon on this, expect a few oddballs from me and some Japanese albums too. I'm limiting myself to 2 albums per artist, so to have variety and not be a top 15 where almost half is radiohead or Cafe Tacvba 😂
