I'm not a huge Star Wars guy either, have seen most of the movies I think except the two most recent ones, but really not an expert on the whole world and characters at all. Will that matter for Andor? I keep hearing so many good things about it.

I think you would miss some connections to other Star Wars things, but I don't think you would be completely lost in the plot. If the thought of a sci-fi war time political thriller sounds good to you I'd highly recommend.

It's not necessary. The story is pretty universal (evil empire oppressing people, rebels standing up).

It probably enhances it a bit though. I would say if you've seen the original trilogy at any point in time you're golden. It's really a "prequel" to Rogue One but give that a watch afterwards if you're so inclined, you don't have to watch it before.

I think it does a great job of dropping you into the timeline. I think you could take this show and set it in pre-WW2 Austria or France and it would fit right in. I don't think a vast knowledge of Star Wars is needed if you've watched the original Star Wars movie/trilogy. That same Empire in those movies is the Empire in Andor. I think it's a great series if you like spycraft, political intrigue, and stories about the ordinary people who have to go through extraordinary circumstances for freedom. It doesn't have laser swords and space wizards.

I modified my post a bit:

If you've watched the original trilogy you'll be okay knowing who the major players are (Emperor - who is not shown but always mentioned, Mon Mothma), some casual mentions in the show like Grand Moff Tarkin, and some locations like Yavin. Not required, but you'll get some of the references.

If you go beyond that, to Episode I-III you'll get some of the players like Bail Organa. Again, not necessary but definitely opens up the lore a bit.

If you watch Rogue One you'll be pretty versed on a few other characters.

Again, none of this is necessary, and the show stands up on its own...but definitely little things you pick up on.

Definitely sounds like something I would enjoy!
 
I'll say this too about the series. If you decide to watch it, try to watch it in 3 episode increments. If you do it one at a time, you may find it slow because there's some world building Tony Gilroy is establishing at the beginning that's not as heavy on the action. The story is set up mostly in 3 episode arcs in season 1 with episode 7 being a bit of a one off before the next arc. The 2nd season was released in 3 episode sets each week.

Not really, the story is engaging and most of the characters (maybe all?) are new to Star Wars except for Andor (and Forrest Whitaker’s character) who was in Rogue One but this show was a prequel that movie so you aren’t missing anything.

Yeah, I always recommend watching it this way. Each story arc is spread across 3 episodes so if someone just watch the first episode and decides it’s not for them they are not really getting the full story.

The Americans is in competition for my favorite show ever, so this is a very good thing. Turns out at least one of the writers worked on both shows.

Yeah, you feel the similarities in how the writers like to ratchet up the tension and then having shit fall apart at the most inopportune time and then have the heroes barely get away by the skin of their teeth. It’s harrowing stuff.

And the way that a lot of the moral grayness and complications come from making the characters multi-dimensional people, and all the messiness and compromises that arise from that.

I was going to say I don't think I've seen anyone mention that show here but agreed it's great. Who can hate Natasha Lyonne & Rian Johnson?

Even not great episodes are fun. Though I have to say I preferred Russian Doll for its sci-fi and time travel aspects.
