September 2020 Challenge Thread- The Gav-La’s

Day 30 Bonus.

I doubt I'm stealing anyone else's choice with this. I bought this version of After The Gold Rush at a garage sale. When I got home to play it, I realized the wrong album was in it. I'll give a spin today in her memory.

Day 30: “and it looks like we’ve made it to the end ...” RIP..play something by those sadly no longer with us...or dead if you like

A posthumus album seems fitting for the occasion.

Jason Molina - Eight Gates

Had the good fortune to see him play as/with Magnolia Electric Company. Man, can't believe this was 11 years ago!

The End. (👏)
This was gonna be my pick, still sad to think he's gone but the music will live forever 💙

In lieu of Molina, I will do a different tribute

DAY 30
REST IN POWER
Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela - Rejoice
Both of these powerhouse artists are no longer with us, but hopefully they can rest easy knowing they left behind a hell of a legacy for themselves. 🔥💙

Jeez I fell behind. Time to play catchup. I'll keep it under one post and add the photos as I play them. I hope I make it to the buzzer!

Day 25: “Life on Mars”..it’s 70’s night ..

I've used a decent amount of my 70's picks already and most of the rest are my GF's comedy albums. With that said, it gives me a very good reason to break out my oldest 7" with one of the greatest songs of all time. If any song deserves to be the lone song on one side side it's this

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (b side/ I'm In Love With My Car

Day 26: ”Stranger Things..” - 80’s classics time

Against all odds, I think that Willie Nelson has aged into the modern music scene as well as anyone else. He tours like crazy, is on pretty much every current cool country artist's releases, and has cemented his legendary status in most people's minds. I snagged a passable copy of Always On My Mind on the cheap recently. Not my favorite by any means but it has an enjoyable cover of Bridge Over Troubled Waters and some other goodies.

Day 27: “Labels”- picture those immortal circular label designs

Jenny Lewis is such a great artist for so many reasons, one of which is she has such a good feeling for her visual art complementing her musicality. Acid Tongue (as the title suggests) really places me back in the early-70's, West Coast musical world in many ways. The label art just adds to it, evoking a little bit of Hotel California and a lot of the Pacific Coast Highway themes...at least in my view.

Day 28: “Simply the best..”..play a great best of or a various artists compilation album

As a newer and younger collector with some space limitations, I'm much more fond of GH albums for artists who pumped out albums in the 70s and 80s, at least those who I don't exactly need a full discography of. I was able to snag this at Target on a really good sale recently and this gives me a perfect excuse to spin it.

Elton John - Diamonds (The Ultimate Greatest Hits)

Day 29: “Devolution ..”- albums that go back to basics

She's really anything but basic and simple, but it's really a testament to how much good work can be done with a beautiful, soulful voice and a piano. Norah Jones is one of my all-time favorites (probably going to have a place on the N&G Top 500 submission...) and her highest profile release is a great example of this theme

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me

Day 30: “and it looks like we’ve made it to the end ...” RIP..play something by those sadly no longer with us...or dead if you like

No words needed on this one, just an all-timer brilliant album

Day 29: “Devolution ..”

They started to get back to the basics with the previous album "The Serenity Of Suffering", but this one brought them all the way back.

I really don't know what they were thinking with those dubstep albums.
