Portland / Oregon

I live in Olympia, but my wife hates Seattle, so...

I’ll be workin the merch stand at Pickathon again this year. I think Saturday morning and 2-7pm on Sunday are my shifts.

Nice, my wife is also working merch...though not sure what her shifts are. I'll be shuttling bands around in a Gator at odd hours.

I know that @Dead C and @Matt M will be there, and @GritNGlitter has been thinking about it. We will have to round everybody up at some point.

Welcome to the PNW! Vancouver always seems to get a bad rap, but I know many who love living there, and it is developing a really nice food and beer scene. The rush hour grind is a nightmare, but if you don't have to contend with a commute to Portland for "normal" business hours, nothing to worry about there.

Thanks. I don't think I will have to worry about that for the most part. Right now I'm trying to just figure out where to look apartment wise all the way in FL and then figure out how I'm moving 500+ albums across the country.

Alas, no job + child + spouse who works Saturdays = no pickathon for me.

Are you thinking of moving there? I have friends who live there and they like it. Seems like a good place.

Any chance you can ask your friends what neighborhoods in Vancouver I should be avoiding? Going the 2nd week of August to find an apartment.

OK, anybody going Thursday for Pickathon? Debating grabbing a ticket and coming out for that. Although a little grumpy that it's $90 for a limited evening lineup.

Also, who is all going in general? We need to catch up!

I’ll be there all weekend, including Thursday. Maybe a late night Needles & Grooves meet-up to share a Lauretta Jean’s pie?

OK Pickathon people. What of the lesser knowns is not to miss this year?

I'm looking forward to Dan Mangan, Gold Star, B Boys, Viagra Boys, Jupiter & Okwess, HC McEntire, Cedric Burnside, Mdou Moctar.

I will be camping out in the barn for the one performance of the Richard Swift Hex Band.

What are the main music venues in the PDX area I should be keeping an eye on for shows once I move.

Welcome to the Portland area! A number us have met up at local shows, and I'm sure it will happen again. Let us know when you have plans to see a show and you may have company.

For indie shows spanning many genres - the first 3 are my favorites, but the latter two are also very worth going to (all are in PDX).
Also, Edgefield (about 20 miles east of town) is a fun outdoor summer venue, and the Oregon Zoo (in Portland) actually get some great shows.

The Crystal Ballroom gets some decent shows, but the experience is pretty lacking, and the sound is wretched. Avoid if at all possible. My strategy is to discover emerging bands while they are still playing the venues listed above.

For jazz, check out the Jack London Revue downtown. They get some great touring acts, and the Mel Brown Quartet is an awesome local outfit that plays every Thursday evening.

Didn't say earlier, but Portlander here (Beaverton, specifically)! Been here for ~80% of my life and while it's quiet, it's home and I'm happy here.

Anyone here going to Julia Jacklin at Aladdin Theater in November?
