See, I don’t know who’s doing what when but If I coulda included them both as a single entry I probably would have chosen them over Butch.

Mickey probably has a wider range of influences and abilities, but when he left the band in the early 70s and Bill was the only drummer, the Dead had some of their best and creative live shows. That gives Bill the nod for me.

I thought it was interesting neither of us chose both of them. I chose Mickey because I've seen him in several different iterations including a few planet drum tours, and the musicians and equipment he chose made for great shows that were very different from the Dead.

As a non-drummer I don’t notice subtleties . There is a relatively small list of drummers I actually notice. A friend of mine, who’s a drummer swears up and down that the best drummer to him is the session drummer from Sting’s solo albums and I am sure he is probably amazing but as a non-trained drummer that technical prowess is completely wasted on me.

Vinnie Colaiuta is supposedly the shit but I will haveta to take all you drummers word for it.

drummers' drummers that a casual wouldn't necessarily pick up on:

Kenny Aronoff, Vinny, Terry Bozzio, every drummer that zappa/yes/bowie/king crimson had, jojo mayer, mario duplaintier (gojira)

Drumeo has a great series of professional drummers learning songs they've never heard before and doing their own takes, it's great:
