May 2021 - Vinyl Spins Challenge Thread

Day 11: Maturity
Where the feck did Monday go?

David Bowie - Black Star

I hope I am able to deal with my imminent demise this well and produce a work of art like this. There was quite a bit of buzz leading up to its release, the usual “his best since X”. But in this case, it lived up to the hype.

I really need a proper copy of this in my life. Are good pressings readily found at this point by chance?

DAY 11
MATURITY
Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots
Shamelessly pandering to our challenge thread overlord @Joe Mac with this one 😉 although I did genuinely want to spin it, as it fits this theme and it's been a bit since I've listened to it front to back.

Perhaps it is the stan in me talking, but in some ways I do actually think Albarn's voice is better now than it was in the 90s, albeit very different, of course. The newest Gorillaz album is a good showcase of his vocal capabilities still being pretty great. However considering that on most songs on this album, the production is very minimalist and the vibe is much more intimate than other Albarn records, the album sort of lives and dies on whether the artist's vocals are up to snuff and I think Damon delivers on this fantastic and underrated solo venture.

I do really like this one. I've always felt that its really really strong, its up there with the first The Good The Bad and The Queen album as a downtempo hidden gem that gets underrated in his catalogue!

Also yes he does tend to sing more now than he did in the 90s, things could get a bit all the lads shouty shouty at times with blur.

It annoys me to no end that this RSD they're doing a Gorillaz box set (🙄) when it would be a perfect opportunity to finally repress The Good, the Bad & the Queen. RSD would also be a good excuse to repress some oddities like Democrazy for the completionists, but noooo let's repackage all the Gorillaz albums for the fifteenth time 🤮

Or even if you do Gorillaz cuz that’s what the kidz will splurge to buy on crazy colour vinyl at least one that’s a bit rarer rather than an unnecessary box set.

Yeah that first The Good The Bad and the Queen album desperately needs repressing, as does all the blur stuff to be fair. Not only 21 but the standard black pressings from in it have dried up again.

That’s before we get to the rarities. I don’t remember Demo Crazy being worth owning from what I remember of it though lol.

The Gorrilaz stuff is the only stuff of his that is reliability in print lol!

Yeah I remember looking at the prices for 13 a while back in disbelief. Definitely glad to have the 21 boxset as it was a pretty convenient (if expensive) way to check a big chunk of a discography off my wantlist.

Reminds me I almost finally bought a copy of Mali Music a while back but ended up passing for reasons I can't even remember, I hesitate to look now to see what prices are like... that seems a perfect example of the kind of record to go quietly OOP and no one notice or care. But I care!!!

This was on my shortlist, nice choice today.

Day 11: Maturity

I didn't follow Riley Kiley all that much when they were active, but Jenny Lewis's solo career has been nothing but impressive to watch and listen to. She's developed into a great lyricist with a wry delivery, along with fostering that Stevie Nicks type detached-stateswoman vibe.

Hello? Is this thing on? As always, I will be showing up late and leaving early according to my Modus Operandi.

Day 1: Worker’s Unite

So today was set as International Workers Day by the Socialists and Communists of the Second International. Celebrate by playing something by a Socialist or a Communist or about ones or even just something that celebrates the working classes or working class values!

Fela Kuti and Africa '70 - Roforofo Fight

I was perusing my collection and had a few bands in mind, but most struck me more as Progressives with socialist leanings like Springsteen, anti-capitalists like 'insert name of punk band here' or anti-establishment like Rage Against the Machine and Run The Jewels. Although the first thing I think of when I think of the political activism of Fela Kuti is more along the line of anti-imperialist and against government corruption, but in the greater scheme of things I think that's just Socialism by another name. I mean the guy created a commune for people that he declared free of Nigerian rule. That whole thing led to about a metric fuck-ton of arrests and the death of his mother due to injuries sustained when soldiers threw her out a window during a raid. Say what you want about his personal life, he really stood for what he believed in and paid multiple prices for it.

Alright I'm new round here but I'll try to jump in on this thing since it's a new month and see if I can keep up.

Day 1: Workers Unite

The Weakerthans - Reunion Tour (2007 Epitaph / Anti )
View attachment 97646

The Weakerthans came to mind pretty quickly when I saw the theme of working class music for whatever reason. I spent nearly four years in Ontario in my early twenties before moving back to the states, so there will always be a strong love for my Canadian neighbors. Got to see the band live once circa 2002 or 2003.

The first cut, 'Civil Twilight' is the lovelorn musings of a long-since-over-it bus driver at the end of yet another workday. 'Relative Surplus Value' may not be a blue collar tale, but it is another yarn of an employee reeling under job inflicted stressors.

Aging men hiding from their wives watching curling, the cyclical thrift store life of furniture, a band going about their job of just trying to make music for people. So many of John K Samson's songs are filled with stories about everyday folks, just trying to get through another day and figure out what the big picture is but also what all the little moments mean.

The first band I thought of when I read Day 1 was The Weakerthans. Not only was Samson a member of Propaghandi (who have a song called The Only Good Fascist is a Very Dead Fascist), but the name of the Weakerthans band itself comes from the Union anthem Solidarity Forever. If you scour the internet enough you can even find a clip of John K Samson singing the song.

Day 11: Maturity
Play an album by an artist who sounds every bit as good, if not better, in their golden years as they did in their youth.

The Flaming Lips "American Head" (2020 WB)

The Flaming Lips have been at it since 1983 and were already well into their career when they created a series of masterpieces in The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots and Embryonic. American Head, the band's 16th studio album, is a return to those glory days in my opinion.

Pusha T - Daytona

Pusha T started out as one half of Clipse, formed in 1992 but they broke out in the early 2000s. Their work together is really good, but for me my love of King Push started later in his career when he went solo. Starting with his features on Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and including his 3 solo releases Push has become one of my favorite rappers! I don't know if golden years applies considering he's 43, but I'm going to allow it haha I would love to see My Name Is My Name pressed on vinyl; it's towards the top of my wantlist.

Catch-Up!

Day 9: VE Day
Kanye West-The College Dropout

"Through the Wire," and the whole fact that no one thought he could put out his own album and had trouble getting signed. Then he made my favorite hip hop album. Good thing he turned into such a humble dude!

Great choice, I considered playing this one too! I love the end of Last Call where he details the journey to releasing the album and is like, 'I played Jesus Walks for them and they didn't sign me' haha But seriously, thinking about it, that song is a banger from the get go so I don't understand what labels were thinking either haha.

I've really enjoyed the songs she's released lately with Serengeti but never really listened to her music otherwise, I'll have to check this one out!

One of the most underrated albums from last year. It didn't make my Top 10, but I've spent a bit more time with it this year and feel like maybe that was a mistake on my part. Full disclosure, I couldn't really listen to it in the apartment last year much because one of my girlfriend's close friends died in a motorcycle accident around the time the album released. So, needless to say, the record was dormant for the majority of 2020.

This was my other consideration for today. Great choice.

Paul Simon - Still Crazy After All These Years

I dont have any of his album past 86's Graceland but that's not because I dont want them! Paul's music is still surprisingly really good! Even as recently as 2018 with his album reworking his old song hes still putting out great projects. It's safe to say that he is STILL crazy after all these years

Day 2: Difficult Second Album

Pick an album where you think the artist has made light of such notions and absolutely smashed it out of the park.

CHVRCHES - Every Open Eye

On CHVRCHES debut album The Bones of What You Believe I liked a few of the songs A LOT and a lot of the songs a few. But, Every Open Eye came out and blew away all of my expectations. I adore this album from beginning to end and still feel it's their best work. If I remember correctly, they played a show in a small theater at the Masonic Temple in Detroit the day the album came out. I faintly remember walking into the venue and barely squeezing into the room they were playing in, because the Masonic Temple is a shithole and continues to be not just the worst venue in Detroit, but the worst venue I have ever been to. And I have seen Alkaline Trio at a shitty coffee shop with no sound dampening anywhere. Anyway.....CHVRCHES second album good. Yeah.

Day 3: Celebrate Spring

This is the May Day bank holiday over here. Before the socialists made it a Labour day it was our traditional date to have festivals celebrating spring. Play an album that fills you with the joy, beauty and fresh hope that spring encapsulates.

The Lucksmith - A Good Kind of Nervous

This entire album just sounds like Spring to me. Under the Rotunda seems to take place on a nice spring night (in my head it does, at least). Columns of Steam sounds like it was written in a field and the song Up seems like a perfect Spring day where you launch yourself into the air with weather balloons and knock out the power for blocks when you land in some electric lines. Even though the actual event of Lawnchair Larry took place on July 2nd, it could have just as easily been in Spring. Ha. Anyway, the album is just a pleasant traipse through a nice dandelion field. All peaceful and nice. Except for that whole song about being obsessed with serial killers and murders and stuff. Every thing else is nicey spicey and easy squeezy.
