On another note, The Last of Us 2 sounds grim and bad. It's not the game for me in the current situation, but it also just doesn't seem very interesting. The other one was interesting based on the complex feelings the characters choices made you feel. This one just seems to be like "grim-dark overly violent misery porn" = good game

I didn't really read the spoilers, but I saw that IGN gave it a 10 today, which made me think about getting it at launch. Haven't done that with a game in a while. The first one is definitely a top game for me last gen. Although, the multiplayer cemented it in the top.

Are you saying that based on the spoilers or reviews?

I have not read the spoilers.

It's getting good "numbered" scores but both the Kotaku and Polygon reviews (which don't give grades) made it seem like an absolute slog

From reading summaries of those and GameSpot it sounds like perhaps now is a very unfortunate time for it to be released.

Idk even the lesser reviews give it around an 8, and call the story messy, but not necessarily bad.

It's sitting at a 96 on metacritic at the moment, which is pretty insane. Sure, the story is probably very dark, but that's less a fault of the game, and more just unfortunate timing. The consensus seems to be that it's a new stepping stone for storytelling in video games.

My roommate and I will be getting it, but, yeah, I may have to play it in spurts and buffer it with something happy.

That's a lot of 10s! Probably will be hard for me to resist.

And from what I can tell, the spoilers for TloU2 were taken out of context from within the story, so if you saw them, it won't harm the experienece of the game. Gamers gonna rage.

Game scores are meaningless. Naughty Dog stuff is always going to be at like 95 since there is so much groupthink in game scores/reviews.

I think there's some truth to that, but I love all the Naughty Dog games I've played, so it doesn't seem too biased to me.

Edit: truth to naughty dog groupthink I mean. Definitely truth to scores not being as important as the actual content in well done reviews, if that's even meaningful, depending on your tastes.

RE: Resident Evil, are the 2 and 3 remasters good games to play for someone who has never played before? I remember playing 5 very briefly years ago over a friends house and I hated not being able to walk and shoot at the same time.

This may be true in some degree, but even just looking at most of the reviews themselves, people seem to be in agreement that the game is overall great -> excellent (that's to say nothing on whether it may be too dark for some to play at the moment)

2 is great, and very fun, I recommend.

3 I have not played yet, because I hear they cut a lot from the original game and it is very short. Will be waiting for a deep sale on that one.

I absolutely loved the remake for 2. If you've never played any resident evil games, it's hard to say how much you will like it. Big focus on ammo/healing management. 3rd person shooters are also a no-go for some. Walking and shooting not a great idea. What I love about it is you always feel like you're afraid of running out of ammo, your next shot will miss, a zombie is going to get to you, or a boss is going to take you out. Feels like you're just getting by and surviving. Really exhilarating, especially going for S+ with only 3 saves on a later playthrough.

If that sounds fun to you, I think it's a great starting point.

RE2 remake is the perfect first RE game. It perfectly recreates what it felt like to play the original version back in the day. RE3 is a lot shorter and doesn't really appeal to me (I never played the original either)

RE2 remake has been my favorite released since RE4 but I enjoyed 5 (I'm used to the tank controls). It takes the best parts of Resident Evil 6 (You can walk/run + aim/shoot), adds a fresh coat of paint and has plenty of replay value. If anyone is also looking for some cheaper games now in this vein I can't recommend both of The Evil Within games enough.

Not to belabor the point, but the Vice review is also very negative. But it doesn't have a "number" so it won't be included in game scores.

I don't like the design of the PS5 or that it always needs a stand but the games look great. Especially Rachet & Clank, I love that series and I really like what they showed. Won't be buying at launch though, I try to wait until the second production run in case they are any issues and I've had real bad luck with PS4s this gen. Really hope the PS5 is better hardware.

This isn't to belabor the point either, or put down your's (MGS V also got 10s everywhere, and was thoroughly disappointing in reality, so I get where you're coming from), but I imagine this is going to be a game you just have to play and determine for yourself. The story is going to be really transgressive for a video game, the grim nature of it notwithstanding, and that's going to appeal to a lot of people and be a put off for some.

And this goes without mentioning the technical prowess of the game, which I'm sure is extraordinary, regardless of the story.

One of my fav movie critics (who is definitely not beholden to video game reviewer groupthink) did a spoiler free piece on his experience with TLoU2 if anyone's interested. Has me inching toward buying my own copy.
