Best Music of 2021

I promised myself I'd do a better job keeping up with new releases this year yet so far I've only listened to 2 albums lol. AOTY so far is Ashnikko. I could definitely see her sticking in the top 5 for the year. I loved it on first listen and it's only grown on me.

Looking forward 2/3 of my favorite artist trifecta have albums coming soon so things should start getting heated

Only 2?? Wow, man, 2021 has been chocked full already! Who are your 2/3 artists dropping albums soon?

I know!! To be fair I have been spending alot of time with older albums that are new to me

And my trifecta are St Vincent, Lana Del Rey and Father John Misty. And fingers crossed he drops also at some point this year

Did a quick check and it looks like I'm up to 61 releases from '21 so far. This year, and hopefully the rest of the decade moving forward, I've made a Google Sheet cataloging every release (album, mixtape, EP, et al) I've gotten to and assigning a point value out of 10, with half-point intervals. Point values for each album are subject to change through the year. Anything with a 7 or higher gets a song added to a Spotify playlist and should help to revisit favorites. So far, nothing has gotten higher than 8.5 points. I can share this playlist if anyone is interested.
I should've done this in years past, but pleased to start now. So far, I'll endorse that there are many that I like, but only a few that I love. A fair amount of meh, too.

How do you feel about Julien Baker? Have you checked out her new album? As well, since you are a fan of LDR, may I recommend you check out New-York based signer-songwriter Cassandra Jenkins, I think you might like her brand of indie-folk. Her vocals are soft and breathy and on standout track "Hard Drive", you are treated to beautiful spoken-word poetry over a loose jazz melody.

I also try to listen to as many new releases as possible this year and try to check out most new releases mentioned here. I love finding new music.

My favorites in February, without any order:

The Weather Station "Ignorance"

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets "Shyga! The sunlight mound"

Nick Cave/ Warren Ellis "Carnage"

Claud "Super Monster"

Altin Gün "Yol"

Cassandra Jenkins "An overview on phenomenal nature"

The Hold Steady "Open door policy"

Melvins "Working with God"

Bodies of Water "Is this what it's like"

Black Country, New Road "For the first time"

Tele Novella "Merlynn Belle"

Balthazar "Sand"

I feel a bit similar to @Rip_City in regards to the quality of releases. I think there are many good albums so far this year, but not many that feel absolutely excellent/ classic to me. Definitely would love to see @Rip_City 's Spotify list as I know your taste in music is really great :)
I also add the albums I like most to a Spotify list, so I can more easily revisit them. I rather add more than less, so there are quite many albums in that list.

Makin' me blush😊

Here's mine:

Glad to see Cassandra Jenkins on a few lists. Definitely a favorite of mine thus far.

The Cassandra Jenkins album is very good indeed. Very atmospheric and intimate.

Unfortunately it seems to be a bit difficult to find it on vinyl for a decent price in the EU.
It's still available on bandcamp (the 3rd pressing), but shipping is more expensive than the record. I hope it will be very successful and see a broader release over here.

What would you call this new Mogwai album? It's not truly post-rock, not truly rock, just a mix of those two with some progginess and electronics thrown in. It's the first Mogwai album I've listened to since Rave Tapes which I remembering not liking that much. It's definitely interesting and varied but I wish they picked one style over the course of an album instead of a mishmash of different sounds.

Very good! 😁

Julien Baker is so far the only member of boy boygenius that I have listened to yet. I acknowledge their dominance in the genre rn but so far nothing they have put out (individually or as a group) has grabbed me

Cassandra Jenkins I've been planning on checking out since shes been getting so much hype here, just havent gotten to her yet
