August 18 - Bad Poetry Day - Play an album with terrible lyrics. Bonus points for posting your favorite cringe-worthy lyric.

William Onyeabor ‎– Atomic Bomb (Wilfilms Records, 1978 First Nigerian Pressing)

Before I go into this I am going to caveat it by saying this album is AMAZING. Onyeabor lays the funk down with every single album, but I have to admit that his lyrics are sometimes......questionable.

I want to realize, man
The way I feel in me (how do you feel?)
I want to realize, women
The way I feel in me (how do you feel?)
I'm going to explode
(You mean you're gonna to explode?)
I'm going to explode, watch out
I'm going to explode
Like atomic bomb

Moorrissey "Low in high school"

I've decided to pick this record solely for the lyrics of "Spent the day in bed". While I like the arrangement of that song, the lyrics are quite weak by Morrissey's standards and especially I can't agree to his "recommendation to stop watching the news as they make you feel afraid and frightened" . I think it's utterly important to know what's going on in the world. I know @Joe Mac recently also criticized late Morrissey especially for this song.

So these are the lyrics:

"Spent the day in bed
Very happy I did, yes
I spent the day in bed
As the workers stay enslaved
I spent the day in bed
I'm not my type, but
I love my bed
And I recommend that you
Stop watching the news
Because the news contrives to frighten you
To make you feel small and alone
To make you feel that your mind isn't your own
I spent the day in bed
It's a consolation
When all my dreams
Are perfectly legal
In sheets for which I paid
I am now laid
And I recommend to all of my friends that they
Stop watching the news
Because the news contrives to frighten you
To make you feel small and alone
To make you feel that your mind isn't your own
Oh time, do as I wish
Time, do as I wish
Oh time, do as I wish
Time, do as I wish
Oh time, do as I wish
Time, do as I wish
Oh time, do as I wish
Do as I wish
I spent the day in bed
You can please yourself
But, I spent the day in bed
Pillows like pillars
Life ends in death
So, there's nothing wrong with
Being good to yourself
Be good to yourself for once
And no bus, no boss, no rain, no train
No emasculation, no castration
No highway, freeway, motorway
No bus, no boss, no rain, no train"

Yeah it’s not just cringy content it’s also cringy wordplay from someone who historically had such a way with words. That said it fits squarely into his modern day persona as a dirty racist fake news gammon.

OK, I need to couch a lot of this. First, I truly enjoy the movie. It's a B-Level cheese fest of a movie. Wikipedia calls it a "British-Christmas Zombie Musical Film"l which makes it unique in its own right. It's by and large really charming, the story has enough turns to be interesting while being oddly rewatchable. Not too scary but enough frights to keep interest going, and given how derivative teen movies can be, it subverts a lot of expectations along the way. Ella Hunt in particular stands out. There's also several songs which are legitimately catchy and great (Soldier at War, most of Hollywood Ending, Turning My Life Around). Vinyl wise, the art work is really cool and the blood splatter vinyl really fits the whole aesthetic.

However, when you a bloody zombie musical with teens, some cringeworthy lyrics are prone to appear. In general, there's a good reason songs in movies like these tend to avoid cultural references. However, the Fish Wrap...it's a comedy song but was not their strength. Feels like something you might see at, well ,a HS talent show. Imagine this...rapped..by two people in penguin suits. Hilarious but terrible.

(Flow)
My favorite dish is fish, mother flipper
And I eat it for the hell of it
A nice bit of halibut
That's not the only fish they got
Mackerel! (Mackerel!)
I can take more than a snackful
Salmon with some jammin’
I can drink it by the tapful
Haddock all is radical
I eat the fins, I eat the gills
Pollock, cod, flounder, guppy
All fish is delicious, sue me

(Hook)
There's not enough fish in the sea, baby
There's not enough fish for me
(Fish is delish!)
There’s plenty of fish in the sea, baby
But there's not enough fish for me

Awesome choice. I find his lyrics endearing. Obviously influenced by ESL. Here's a favorite of mine:

And that is what I mean
And that is what I am saying
When the going is good
You will have many friends
But when the going is tough
Most of them will disappear
And they never come back
When they come back
They have come back to help in knocking you
Down, down, down, down
(That's bad, very, very bad)

Kanye West - The Life of Pablo

There are some great songs and great lyricism on this album, but lines like this are definitely cringe-worthy:

Now if I fuck this model
And she just bleached her asshole
And I get bleach on my t-shirt
I'ma feel like an asshole

come for the beats, stay for inspired lyrics like these:

I see you baby shaking that ass
Shaking that ass, shaking that ass
I see you baby shaking that ass
Shaking that ass, shaking that ass
Alright, don't touch me

I see you baby shaking that ass
Shaking that ass, shaking that ass
I see you baby shaking that ass
Shaking that ass, shaking that ass
Alright, don't touch me

Alright

I see you baby shaking that ass
Shaking that ass, shaking that ass
I see you baby shaking that ass
Shaking that ass, shaking that ass
Alright, don't touch me

I see you baby...

I see you baby shaking that ass
Shaking that ass, shaking that ass
I see you baby shaking that ass
Shaking that ass, shaking that ass
Alright, don't touch me

I see you baby...

Don't touch me
Don't touch me
Don't touch me

To be honest, I've always found Kanye's rapping abilities and lyrics to be far inferior to his production abilities. He has some great one-liners, though.
