The Return of the Challenge Thread - February 2020

It’s a fantastic compilation! Not all funk tracks but it gives a good insight into pre-revolution Iran and its music. It also has tracks from Selda and Googoosh, who are two of the bigger stars from that era, alongside artists with very little info online.

Day 2: Happy Groundhog Day! Arthur Verocai - Arthur Verocai Even as I slowly chip away at the breadth of Tropicalia music, I always come back to this one. The unparalleled arrangements here always push me to hyperbole and compare this closely to albums like Forever Changes and Odessey & Oracle.

I actually avoid buying poly-lined sleeves and instead use regular plastic inner sleeves like these and house them in the paper sleeves. Not only are they cheaper than poly-lined, I don't need to throw the paper sleeves out.

I don’t know what the rules here are for using the word “grails” here, but if it’s against the written law, well, that’s 40 lashes for me! 2020 has already granted me two records way high on my wantlist, both of which have not been easy to find for years. My plan to hold back on buying new...

Record cleaning - what's your method?

Where was Tergikleen bashed? That's one ingredient I see almost universal praise for. I just can't get it locally, if not I'd have some by now.

Probably my find of the year! An original pressing of Pacific, feat. Haruomi Hosono (YMO), Shigeru Suzuki and Tatsuro Yamashita. A jazzy, belearic instrumental beaut! From the scribblings to the sticker label, it looks like it was a local radio copy. Cover is worn but the record sounds pristine.

Sold a decent amount of records at a vinyl fair yesterday, but of course I brought some back... 😶 These are some new purchases earlier in the month! So happy Light in the Attic reissued the Sachiko album, and that Eddie Jobson record has Synclavier jams for days. Lucked out at a local...

So stoked to get that Rupa album! Numero did such a good job with their Duster reissue campaign and this following right after is way too generous. Extra shot on that supposed Bengali Tiger variant that’s really just multi-color streaks on translucent brown/orange. The Masabumi Kikuchi...

Local store’s taking a break so they had a clearance sale - they bring in a lot of soundtracks and Third Man stuff so I didn’t hold back! The soundtrack for The Burning is a lot more over-the-top than I expected it to be - then again it’s Rick Wakeman, but somehow I thought it’d just be moody...
