My favourites are Phases of Reality by William Bell and I’ll Play The Blues by Albert King. The Eddie Floyd is very enjoyable too. But the William Bell is a revelation to me. It’s a very fine box so I think you’ve done well!

I have a UK first press of Sly with the free EP. I’ve enjoyed it very much over the years… but couldn’t resist grabbing the VMP to hear how it squares up.

Has anyone spun their Odetta yet? Some of the feedback here on how harsh the Wilson Pickett sounded gave me pause for thought… how’s this one going down?

I think this has to be their best anthology yet… some classics, some crate diggers, a mix of genres. This will be my first Anthology purchase.

The mix on many of his records is heavy and muggy, at least to my ears. And the sax sounds cheesy to me. Not always. But often enough for me to just react to it… I guess Bruce is just not for me.

Yes, the thick voice is something that is struggle with but every album I’ve approached, and there’s been a few, has left me cold. I haven’t kept a single one. I haven’t found my entry point so that I just get it. The music either sounds soupy or schmaltzy (Born To Run). Plodding or dull...

Agreed. But… it’s also Bruce. I wouldn’t have picked up any Bruce record. I find his records almost impossible to consume. There’s something lifeless about his music to me.

Sorry… I mean Black Rhythm is, to me, far superior to Peace and Rhythm. I’m not sure when I’d reach for Peace. Maybe it’s a grower, not a shower.

I’m with you… the first Idris is a key record in my gaff. I just can’t imagine choosing this Idris lite option over Black Rhythm Revolution…
