Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Not for nothing, that was posted in 2012.

I also think $800 for speakers at a thrift store is insane unless they are gonna let me test them before I walk out the door.
I may be wrong on the price. Only saw it through the window and the flag was obscuring part of the price hah.

Also they would let me test them I’m sure. They have a lot of audio gear in the back. I grabbed 5 disc SACD player there for $20 and they let me test it. They had some speakers and cables in the back and some amps.

I’m not looking to buy these anyway…they do look pretty sweet though. It’s a thrift/charity shop so prices are usually all over the place

Maybe $80 rather than $800!

I ended up getting my daughter an Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT and some Bluetooth speakers. It's a nice starter setup for her and didn't break the bank. We set it up last night and she listened to Jeff Buckley's Grace that she got from her uncle before going to bed last night. Sounds pretty nice and I like that it cues up for her so she's not having to keep track of where the stylus is going to hit.

I Think that is a good place to start and should serve your daughter well. There is merit in automatic turntables.
Nice to hear an after action report.

I know others here don't like the LP60, but it was my starter deck when I got back into vinyl after my dad's turntable bit the dust. It worked really well for me and was nice to use until I felt confident that investing in a better turntable wouldn't be a waste of money. I think it's perfect for those who are vinyl curious without spending a lot. Far better than the suitcase players, and because it's not that expensive if she decides to upgrade soon it's not a big loss of money and you can sell it for most of what you paid on Craigslist in a weekend.

My only complaint is that they track heavy, which can be detrimental, but what I DO like about them is you literally can't screw anything up. It's all fixed. Press the start button and go!

Whenever my wife and I go on vacation, we take the living room RP-600M's off the stands and put them in a closet, as we have a household of 4 (yes, FOUR) cats. Just put them back as I had some work travel stuff right off of vaca, and I'll be damned if this isn't the best the system has ever sounded. Running to get my tape measure!! 😂

The lp60 served me very well for a period of time and my daughter has it now. I understand its issues but it was a decent table and it would appear they’ve made some substantial improvements since k had mine.

Agree. It's not a table for long term use unless you don't mind the wear on your records.
I don't think 3-3.5g is that excessive. Plenty of 'Real Carts' back in the day tracked at much higher weights.

Yeah, my thought is it's a nice bedroom/studying system for her and maybe she takes it on with her to college. She doesn't need a really elaborate audiophile set up. The Bluetooth option gives her later flexibility and she can tie in her Spotify to those speakers. Of my two daughters, she's the one that will take care of records more than the other. I've already parted with some records of mine that we have mutual interest in that I don't mind getting worn out. I'm doing more with DAC and Roon now anyway.

Preamp question for you smart folks. Now that I'm running two turntables--one with an MC cartridge and one with a MM cartridge--I'm trying to understand what kind of preamp to go for. If I understand some stuff I've read on another forum, it sounds like my best move is to go with a MM preamp and then get a step up device. Is that what you'd do in this situation?

The preamp I want is available in either MM or MC. The MM configuration is cheaper and from those who've demoed both, they suggest this route, but would like to know what others here think.
