Toronto Weird Boys

Just wanted to pass on a really great seller on cogs who's out of Ottawa. His store name is Soundspace, name is Nicholas.. Just a great guy, highly encourage checking his store out. Lots of good stuff and takes incredible care with packaging and communication.

This sounds super familiar, I may have dealt with him before.

Has Kops just given the fuck up on updating their website? They were semi decent about it and now it seems like they'll update every two weeks or so and only with a few titles. I know for a fact they get in a ton too.

There is a sign behind the counter at Kops Oshawa that says "that's a Queen St problem". I think that sums it up

Fuck Kops!

I'd rather buy from anywhere else in Canada.

My first experience with them was positive my second and third were not. There will not be a fourth.

Price wise they're pretty good. I'll always use them as a price comparison before buying anything as it's walking distance from me.
I usually order pick up as it's in and out without navigating the cramped aisles, but again they stopped updating their inventory. Like I'm positive they have Busta, but I don't want to go unless I know for sure, since Rotate is much closer to me.

I don't know how their shipping is though, so I have no frame of reference there.

I bought from them on discogs, early in the pandemic as their prices were good for new items and they shipped quickly. But they seem to have split between used on discogs and new on the website. I still like to pop into the 'Shwa store.

Really? Interesting, I've had good experiences with them for online orders. What was the issue? Did you order from their Discogs or the Webstore? They told me that the Discogs was the stock from one store, while the website was the (Queen St?) store.

Oh, here's definitely one shitty thing about Kops.
When they think they have something good, they have no qualms about completely ripping you off. I think they had a copy of Watch the Throne for about the same price.

My experiences with their shipping and packaging have been fine enough, it's their customer service, or lack thereof that has been an issue for me.

My first order was a big Discogs order my wife and I did together about 3 years ago - everything went smoothly with that.

My second order was through their website and it took them almost a week to write me back and tell me that they didn't have one of the items I'd ordered, then another 4 or 5 days to actually ship it once I'd said I'll take everything else (but the refund on the missing piece came within 24 hours.)

On my third order, they let me know right away they didn't actually have one of the items I'd ordered and offered a replacement equal to up to $4 or $5 more than what I'd paid for the missing item, which I thought was cool. I wrote back asking about a specific item within an hour or two and I heard nothing back after 3 days, sent a follow-up and still nothing, then told them to cancel the full order outright and haven't looked back since. That was about 18 months ago, I think. Maybe longer now.

Like I get things can take time sometimes, especially if you've got multiple locations in play - but to outright not respond to inquires, especially one they themselves invited... I'm REALLY not into that.

Like, I don't give a fuck if it's gonna take you three weeks to ship my shit if you communicate that, and respond to any questions or follow-ups - but lack of communication doesn't work for me. Lack of responding to queries, even less so. I'll give me money to people who actually answer their emails.

So Dead Dog is dead to me (pun intended).

Went to pick up Busta Rhymes "When Disaster Strikes" because they're one of two stores that seem to carry it, and I was in the area anyway. Flipping through the hip hop section the skies part and I see a VG+ copy of the original pressing of Black Star, for $50 which is a steal compared to discog prices. Like, no brainer, it's coming home with me.

Scan it, sure enough, comes up as the 1998 sku.
Open it up, giant scuff marks across almost half of Side A. Fuck it, going to throw it on the turntable and see how it plays.
Put it on....waiting for vocals to kick in....still waiting....
It's the goddamn instrumental version. Nothing anywhere to indicate that's what it was. Not on their tag, not on the album cover, nothing.

I know they were probably duped themselves by whoever sold it to them, but it's hard not to take that personally.

Even the clerk, who I've labelled "Dave Mustane Jr." based on how much he looks like an 18 year old Dave Mustane said it was a fantastic find and he had no clue it was there....if he only knew.

At risk of asking the obvious, did you tell them?

No, I haven't yet.
Honestly, not sure what even the course of action is here. The scuff is the most egregious thing probably but that's just buying used records honestly. Probably thought it wasn't "deep" so just slap the VG+ sticker on it. My fault for not taking it out and checking it over which is a bad habit I have when I find something used that I get excited over.

I'm not sure if I should give them some leeway on the mislabeling of it. On one hand, if you scan it, it not only pulls up the original but ALSO the instrumental versions, so it's likely they just got it, looked it over quickly and gave the person the money. On the other hand, I feel like if you're pricing on discogs - which most tend to do now it seems - and both the instrumental and the original both come up based on the barcode you should definitely toss it quickly on a turntable to see which one you're dealing with.

Just bring it back and let them know it's the instrumentals but there was so indication as such. No biggie, they'll take it back.

Hey weirdos!!

My 10 year old Blundstones need a new sole as I have worn the heel down and it is a bit painful to walk around in them for long. Anyone had Blundstones re-soled? Or just a recommendation on a good shoe repair place in TO?

If anyone is interested in Jar of Flies and is way less impulsive than me, then you'll be rewarded by paying less than half the price from the official site, and support a Toronto music store.
