Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

George Meyer AV in Los Angeles (the ridiculous overcharging shop who has my NAD) is now quoting me $100 just to return my unit to me, on top of the $80 down payment I paid when I shipped it to them (cost applicable towards repair but apparently not shipping? For some reason?). This is ridiculous and is starting to feel borderline criminal (pay my price or im not giving you your property back).

I filed a complaint with the BBB, but any other advice on top of that is appreciated. Do not use this shop under any circumstances.
There are a fair amount of 1 star reviews that seem to have had a similar experience with them refusing to just do the minor fix and insisting on repairs that cost as much as the damn equipment. Scummy.

I know it would be one hell of a trip but would it be feasible to drive down and pick it up yourself?

I don’t know what the price of gas is in California, but I’d have to think a 12 hour drive is gonna cost more than they want to ship it.

@DJSJ

I know someone mentioned something similar earlier but I do think I’d have to let NAD know that the shop they recommended seem to be shady assholes.

I’d also maybe think about a chargeback on the deposit. They didn’t do anything, so they don’t get to keep it.

Reading the reviews, that evaluation fee/deposit is part of their pressure campaign. They apply it to the cost if you let them do the repairs they think are necessary, but they won't just fix what you want, it's all or nothing. And if you don't agree then they keep it. They're counting on people giving up because of the sunk cost. I hate businesses that pull that kind of shit.

I did write to NAD and was assigned a ticket, awaiting further response. Definitely considering a chargeback, though my main priority at the moment is getting amp back.

I don't usually ever read those either, but this might convince me to.
I do read them for businesses but take them with a grain of salt. People who write reviews on yelp are usually people who are disgruntled by something. But you can get a good idea of whether or not their complaints are legit especially if you see the same kinds of complaints popping up. There are way too many 1 star reviews talking about that kinda pressure campaign to think it was only a one off deal. Really frustrating.

As others have said, I’d complain to NAD so that this doesn’t happen to others. If enough people complain maybe they will be taken off NAD’s list of recommended repair shops.

That's what I do with Amazon reviews. But I've avoided Yelp (and most business reviews in general) because I hate their damn website and refuse to download the app.

So I did a little shopping...

Aaaand I bought nothing because it all started at approximately $15,000 and up. Those Focals up top combined with the Naim was the star of the show for me. Speakers are $360,000.

That being said I heard the new Wharfedale Dovedale and they were REALLY nice sounding. Probably my pick of the not $360,000 speakers.

If that’s the XV then yeah I’d love them!

It’s kinda academic though because I don’t see myself ever having €35k to drop on speakers 😂

Did they sound good?
They were incredible. I mean at these shows it's so hard because honestly everything sounds just ridiculous, and it comes down so much to WHAT they're actually playing... track to track stuff sounds so different, but they were a stand out.

Yeah everything I’ve read about their kinda design philosophy points to good. Like old tannoy good but with a few new cheeky ideas. Plus they’re so efficient that you can run them off anything.

And yes in bet, spoilt for choice and everyone is going to have their best and fanciest thing out!

Yeah I kinda wish they just had a room full of people banging pots and pans together and like a corner full of crying babies that you can go hang out in for a minute to reset your ears, like sniffing coffee when you're shopping for cologne or perfume.
