One of the true joys of living in the City of Chicago for three decades is getting to see this man perform on a regular basis (although not as frequently in the 00s when I think I saw him almost weekly). Anyway, another shout out to his playing with Brotz. What a loss.
 
New compilation of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (with Horace Tapscott) with 1 track from each decade. Its a 2LP set with 6 tracks with the absolutely WILD price of £54.

Thought I would share the latest release from Trunk records, Joe Harriott & Amancio D'Silva Quartet – Hum Dono.

I chatted with Jonny Trunk and he confirmed that it comes from the original tapes but digitally cut. I cant wait to give it a proper listen to later after work!! Its a particularly big 'grab' for me as I now have the complete discography of Joe Harriott on vinyl (with a few 7" releases to go), all original apart from this one.

I avoided the Dutton Vocalion reissue. I know the Discogs comments are good but I have heard from a few people locally that its not the best pressing.

An acquaintance has an original, the Dutton Vocalion, and now this Trunk reissue. He said that whilst the original sounds the best, the Trunk one does a fantastic job with the Dutton Vocalion getting last place.

It's a great listen, but I'm not so keen I'd pay that much for it.

While the string of legendary independent labels, from Blue Note and Prestige to Steeplechase and Impulse! loom large in our Spiritual Jazz catalogue, our latest installment concerns the brave and innovative souls who acted ‘privately’, recording and releasing their music without the aid or involvement of a bona fide record company. Making a custom, private press record on your own, without the backing, status and business acumen of an established record company to help out is no mean feat, but it never really was difficult - it’s just a matter of spending money - but the tricky bit, which remains to this day, is what to do exactly with a pallet load of vinyl that’s just been delivered to your door?

Sales and distribution never was easy, and getting it right requires imagination, enthusiasm, dedication, hard work and a more than a little luck. Even for the professionals it's proved immensely difficult at times; perhaps that's why so many private press records remain so obscure and elusive to this day.

Herein we examine a variety of tracks from a selection of privately pressed jazz records, released in the US between 1964 and 1987. One of the most interesting things we’ve found while researching this album is the variety of reasons behind coming up with a self-released record. No two stories are the same; some were done purely out of altruism to further the musical direction of students, others were trying to make it big. But one solid truth remains that binds together each and every selection here – the artists didn’t just make their music for the fun of it, they believed in their art so much that they took whatever steps they had available to them at the time to get their music heard exactly as they wanted - with no spoddy record exec bossing them about!

In keeping with the DIY ethos of private pressings, each of our LP and CD releases has their covers stamped by hand, meaning no two copies are exactly alike. And as always with our Spiritual Jazz series of albums, each comes with liner notes and pics, in this case direct from the artists themselves. Jazzman - We Dig Deeper!

I saw Station One had this on on their wall recently and it got snapped up quickly. The guy who bought it from them immediately posted it for $330 on ebay. This is karma at its finest.

ohh it's all making sense now! i'm glad i didn't drop what i was doing to go there to buy it now that it's getting a reissue. wonder how much station one had it for, but they really do have the best "wall prices" i've seen of any shops around here. love that place.

Absolutely. Based on the eBay price, and it being in really good shape, I’m guessing ~$200 or so. If it was more than $250, that guy is going to for certain lose money. Maybe he’ll learn his lesson!
 
Before I head over to the sale threads, anybody interested in purchasing a spun once Sonny Sharrock - Black Woman? The recent Superior Viaduct reissue. Nice cut from Golden and a good pressing as usual from them, but musically just a bit too wild for me! Ask The Ages is an all timer for me, but this one just veers too far. Lmk!

very glad of all the 'free-er' stuff this is getting a reissue because it's mostly approachable even for someone like me who just doesn't go there...and for me its George Cables on keys, as im just a huge fan of his....but is this a buy and listen once....

oh wait....these days they're all buys and listen once, fuck I have too many records...
