Definitive Audiophile pressings

i am here to hype this one:

didn't have much faith in the VBR series pressing coming out so i grabbed this one after hearing a lot of people talk about it. it's real good. probably from digital but Simon Francis did an excellent job on it.
Any leads on where this can be found in stock?

Alright, another nebulous pressing rabbit hole I'm investigating. Village Green Preservation Society. Back in 2018 KPG did the 50th Anniversary stereo cuts of this, supposed to be great. They repressed in 2022 and by all accounts I'm seeing these are not the same cuts. It's stamped, it may have "HL" in the deadwax instead of KPG. I think the info on Cogs for the 2022 press is all messed up so I'm trying to confirm if the 2022 is actually not KPG. The only way to tell them apart is the 2022 has small ABKO and BMG logos above the barcode. 2018 just had BMG. Anyone happen to have a 2022 copy? Want to check the deadwax and see if it's got KPG in it?

HL is the house mastering engineer in optimal. We get short changed a bit with him doing some of the Euro Rhinos that are mastered by names for the US releases. He’s actually ok but probably not working off the tapes and so they’re generally not as good. I think I’m just sticking with the monos in the box for the kinks early stuff.

Yeah I also have the box, this is actually for a buddy who wants the best stereo press. It's gotta be the 2018 KPGs but at this point I bet they're getting mixed up with the 2022 lesser cuts

My 2018 KPG Village Green has the ABKCO logo above the barcode, not BMG. I had HL cuts of Face to Face and Something Else, thought they were flat and lifeless, moved on to Japanese pressings.

Yeah it looks like you can tell the 2022 because it has both the ABKCO and BMG logos above the barcode. The US 2018 had ABKCO and the EU had BMG. According to Cogs the 2018 EU was actually KPG. Although who knows, info could be wrong there too.

Sorry, I have the 2018 pressing.

Wow! So much to catch up on. Where can I get some of this carcinogenic record cleaner that can fix my Speakers Corner records? (I have a few speakers corner presses from the last couple of years that have severe problems).

The Be With records' Ahmad Jamal pressing has been unavailable for a while, I spoke with them a year or so ago about a faulty record and asked if they could find a copy for me, they were really helpful. I'd definitely recommend buying direct from them if you can. Also a great label, lots of interesting records outside of the Jazz reissues (I'll definitely pick up all the Nucleus titles).

"As for The Ahmad Jamal Trio’s The Awakening, I wish this was as easy to sort out as a faulty Steve Hiett LP!

Our licence expired a couple of years ago and Universal decided they weren’t going to renew it, so that means no more re-presses unfortunately, and we’ve long-since sold out of the last of the stock. I know that the prices keep creeping up on Discogs but I heard from someone else who’d previously got in touch asking if we had any copies down the back of the settee (we don’t… we’ve looked!) and they got back in touch a few months later to say they’d grabbed a still-sealed copy on ebay for $30, so there should still be some sneaky copies out there for not-silly money. Just not on Discogs sadly."

edit - I'd definitely recommend this one:

It isn't carcongenic, that is someone's fake news at work.

They did contain chemicals now banned by the EPA for environmental reasons relating to their production, not health.

The best was Smart Super Potent, but that is long gone.

The readily available Chisto Spray & Wipe is pretty good.

FirstRV has recently discontinued, it was the best pre-cleaner for new records. Some UK retailers may still have some, but check, as it is an extremely volatile compound that evaporates almost instantly.

There is also Last. Last Power Cleaner combined with Last All-Purpose is very effective, and for some reason, makes records sound better. It has been around for 50+ years because it is very, very good.

BTW, I don't know what 'severe problems' are. Nothing can fix a damaged record - like scratches. Pops can usually be fixed, but might need to be identified manually under a magnifying glass and removed (while wet) gently with a fingernail. Random gummy deposits causing pops can be fixed with a little work and one of the aforementioned.

Picked up the Acoustic Sounds Series pressing of Oscar Peterson Trio's Night Train.

The pressing is on par with QRP's typical output, generally without surface noise, though my copy is slightly bowled. No biggie, DNAP.

I'll say the music sounds pretty average overall. Piano great. Drums crisp. Bass, basically absent. Every bass solo sounds very distant, super quiet, recessed. Really unbalanced in that regard.

I havent heard any other versions of this record, so it might just be how it was originally recorded, but overall it is a bit disappointing. Was hoping for a plump low end from a jazz trio. Those AS Bill Evans Trio records are a great example '64 and '65 have a solid low end.

Oh well...

I think it's infill or non fill. I seem to have had a few of the recentish speakers corner reissues.

edit - ordered som First RV, might help with some of my records

Most people just buy these MoFi’s to flip don’t they?
That's insane (and embarrassingly arousing). Were the prices ridiculous? There's a guy who lives a few blocks from me who for years has bought two copies of all MoFi releases, so he has (last time I was at his house) a couple of boxes like this. But the prices he asks are a bit absurd, so it's mostly a finger-strengthening exercise looking through what he has.
