Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

So, I actually think that this "up to 8 free" is one of VMP's biggest grifts ever and I'll explain myself.

Even a day after they announced this, the number of "Join With This Album" choices beyond the last couple of months was already starting to thin out; I'm guessing when they email ....everyone at the same time....a coupon for their free records, after two weeks of pumping this promotion, that everyone will find the same usual suspects that have been lingering in swaps for years to be their "free" albums.

And I put "free" in airquotes because they really aren't, are they? They are albums used to bring your invested cost per record down- so you would have to find up to 8 LP's you would want to pay $21 for normally, or up to $28 on the six month.

I would imagine they would drag this out until summer when they have enough new ROTMs to fill the coffers again for people renewing/signing up.

But to my jaded, cynical eyes this looks like someone cooked up a way to both look apologetic for the price bump and clear out dead af inventory in one subscription bump scheme.

As long as my local will give me 50% discog value in cash or 60-70% in credit I'll take the freebies

They have said they plan to try to keep 250 total albums in the free plan until December. When stuff goes OOS, they plan to add newer titles in.

The list of titles isn’t bad at all. This isn’t like those “sales” they run of only Caroline Rose albums and stuff they can’t give away.

Of course it’s a way for them to clear out inventory. That’s literally what sales and promotions are for.

The part of it that’s dumb to me is that they had to raise prices again bcuz reasons. But then have a sale that brings the monthly cost down to lower than before the price hike.

That’s the fallacy though, they already spent that money so those albums cost them nothing and don’t reduce the amount of money they are bringing in. People see it as a deal for them or justification for the price, but it costs VMP nothing.

Yea— they have spent the money but they are still technically taking a loss on those. Which is fine—they will still end up making money since the markups are so big.

It’s why I don’t like the idea of store credit for issues because store credit is worth less than getting a refund technically. And then you have to spend that money at their store.

Regarding the tickets price discussion…

From a cost comparison standpoint, these are prices I paid for some upcoming shows in Austin TX…all Floor single ticket prices (including fees).

Jason Isbell $89 (ACL Moody)
Depeche Mode $324 (Moody Center)
Neal Francis $37 (Antone’s)
Beck/Phoenix $182 (Moody Center)
Future Islands $55 (ACL Moody)

The glaring aspect is that The Moody Center can F right off…especially their $15 beers.

Yeah, it’s absolutely ridiculous. The secondary market is even worse. I’ve been watching tickets for a sold out Big Thief show and the cheapest I’ve seen tickets is at a 600% markup and I’ve see some at over a 1000% markup. None of them seem to be selling, so I’m hoping prices crater as the show gets closer.

Big Thief just played Birmingham at a small club last week at $45 a ticket and i don't even think they sold out

so I did a thing and signed up for the year and 8 free records. I think the only record I’m for sure trying to snag is the Dave Van Ronk (maybe Anthem of the Sun since my copy is fucked) but I know I’ll have to price swap because there will be some shit I want that is still cheaper elsewhere. If anyone has any recent jazz reissues they’ve been enjoying, would love to hear some recs

I really like my copy of Yusef Lateef.

How does it work for the 8 free records? Do you have to select them all in one time or can you grab one there and a couple next month and so on?

Maybe the thing to do is grab some hip-hop as "free" records and hold them for a few years, VMP pressings tend to rise over time, and probably faster than the same $21 in the stock market.

Whatever bonus you get has to all be used at once. They send you a code that is good for up to 8 albums. Your choice if you use them all I guess.
