J-Jazz (Japanese Jazz)

that's the tax in Japan, if you get them shipped overseas they should take that out, although you might have to pay tax on the shipment here.
I didn’t remember HMV showing the tax and then removing it from when I bought them, but that’s correct and thanks for the reminder. For better and worse, I won’t pay tax for shipment here bc Oregon doesn’t have a sales tax.

My order confirmation says: Price (tax included) ¥ 4,500

I'm also worried about getting hit with a big shipping fee from them later on once the items come into stock so I may cancel my preorder if Dusty Groove thinks they will definitely get them in...

"Overseas shipping charges We will calculate overseas shipping charges based on the weight of your luggage.
Therefore, the shipping fee may differ from the shipping fee provided when you place an order."

I’m not psyched about that possibility. Shipping from Japan has been fair from various vendors, so I’m hoping it’s not terrible if there is a bump.

the Japan price is 4950 yen including the tax (it's advertised on the promotional flyer) - so they probably say that since you are an overseas customer. EMS shipping from Japan has become incredibly expensive since COVID, and if you can average under $7 per record with EMS you're doing well, but since you're not paying the Japanese tax the shipping becomes much less expensive.

and the yen is hitting multi-year lows so its getting ever cheaper

Are these all sold out already or just delayed? Hopefully the later, I didn't pre-ordered any when I could.

I pre-ordered 3 of them, and now seriously considering pre-ordering the other 3, but that's going to be very expensive to have all 6 delivered at once. I initially planned to order the other 3 a bit later, but if they start to be sold out already I probably won't have a chance to. (this is my first foray Into J-Jazz 😬)

I have Misty and Girl Talk already so I preordered the others. They are all killer albums but definitely give a listen to make sure they are all albums you enjoy! some are very stylistically different from each other. I'm excited to get Unicorn the most I think...

oh, yeah, I sampled them and really like them. Agree, Unicorn is very funky and I dig that one too (it's not one of the 3 I preordered). I'm pretty sure I'll end up ordering them all in a couple days...

in the crates...
Ako's Dream - Isao Suzuki Sextet - TBM 2576 (2nd press with original cover)
Chilled, semi-grooved doodling that if it was on Concord and not TBM would be a $5 record. Although the sound quality is typical TBM, and also this 2nd press has the same runout as the first press - so this was probably not a big seller originally. The double guitars is a nice touch for a sextet as the groove is always laid down while one can stretch out. Tsuyoshi Yamamoto is understated on electric keys which is typical and always appreciated...but its Isao-Sans cello nonsense that just kinda bugs....Side 2 plays more consistent for me...

this is a collectors title only and not worth the crazy cash its going for. personally, for the money id invest in some of the (equally) rare male vocal titles that are less collectible as long as the singing in English doesn't bother you because the sound quality is superb and the backing is usually excellent.

also RIP to a legend...and still looking for Mongolian Chant going on 10 years now

In the crates again...
Four Wings - Matsumoto, Suzuki, Sugano and Ohtsuka - PAP 9197 - Trio/FullHouse Japan
Late 70's recording from these legends in a very tight quartet setting. Typical Trio/FullHouse sound (i.e. awesome) and not cut super hot. Kunihiko-san is in really fine form, and I really have no idea why his Audio Lab records aren't going for multiples of what they do (let's be honest they are just about the pinnacle of the recorded music on vinyl). Either way I'm a fan as he may not be the most exciting pianist, but he's so fucking solid all the time.

This is a dope record. And who doesn't want to listen to legends play (mostly) standards. Yeah, Sleepy's sax floats a bit in the mix, but you could do a lot worse. Remember this was a different time and a different place...so it sounds like Tokyo in 1979. And I wish I was there right now.

Recommended and RIP again...

I hope so. All of these had recent reissues on vinyl by Think Records. I wouldn't be surprised if all these recent reissues are reissued again in this serie. I won't mind as I don't have any of these and can't afford any OG but would love to see other with a first proper reissue. Three Ayako Hosokawa records are also reissued by Craftman. I already have one and am buying the two others.

FYI here are other TBM records reissued by Think :

Did you get the Ayako Hosokawa represses through? How do they sound? I've ordered them from discogs and am nervously waiting confirmation that they actually had them in stock.

I have some of the upcoming 6 TBM reissues on pre order as well. I'm assuming all these new Craftman reissues will sound great, although I can't see any details if they are going to be AAA etc? Seems like they make a run based of the amount of preorders they get. The Discogs page for Craftman says they are all One steps, but that can't be right, can it?

I'm not sure the translate works very well on the Craftsman page. Not sure what 'Kodawari' is but "We promise to supply attractive packages and software that you will want to own semi-permanently." isn't quite the hyped sales pitch you usually see.

I have one Hosokawa's reissue they already did last year but couldn't rre-order the other two :( Packaging and sound are both great.

Disappointing that you haven’t been able to pick up the others. They do seem difficult to find, I wonder if more will come available. I think they’ve only just been released really.

I’ve ordered from a Japanese store on Discogs. Not the cheapest to import but hopefully they’ll come through

Unicorn is the only one I preordered. The others are too straight suit conservative for me, although they are nice and the sound is great. Unicorn is on a total other level.

I suppose you ordered from recordshopshibuya? It's HMV Shibuya store Discogs account.

I did, they just confirmed shipping this morning.

I didn't know they were a HMV store but will definitely look at them again. I can't seem to order anything from HMV Japan, I've struggled generally with Japanese imports in the past to the UK & often ignored a lot of Japanese titles because of cost.

I preordered some of the TBM titles from CDJapan. I've not used them before, but hopefully they'll be good

I see that there is a Japanese seller on Ebay who has a few copies of each. I'm not sure what shipping & charges would be like to France.

edit - and recordshopShibuya is listing on Ebay although has removed listing from discogs

CdJapan are very good too, you don't have to worry. One I don't recommend AT ALL is DiscsJapan. I ordered twice from them an both times has to open a dispute on PayPal.

I'll see with my locals if they can have copies. Usually I order from Amazon Japan. Shipping is cheap and customs are paid upfront so no surprises. It's the cheapest option I found even though I avoid Amazon as much as possible. For Japan, they are unbeatable.

Edit: ELLA Records are very good too, they have great auctions on Ebay, mostly on used records. Their grading is reliable, I won a few auctions and everything was ok. They certainly have new records too, maybe I should ask actually.

Fantastic tips. Thanks @Skalap

Good to know CDJapan are reliable. With the pre-order being so long away and I would be bound to get a bit nervous at some point. I'll definitely checkout Amazon & Ella.

The way it works in japan is that the label solicits vendors, and when orders fill the production quota, the solicitation ends. CD Japn, HMV, and other major vendors have put in their orders, and when the order quantity allocated to online sales is sold out on their website, no more orders.

So if you have ordered online from Japan, you will get it. The vendor has reserved the stock.
