Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Neat. I listened to it for the first time the other day and it didn't do much for me. Maybe it'll grow on me like Dirty Projectors did but for now it's a pass.
It's a seminal late 2000's album for me. I was in college in NYC at the time and Grizzly Bear was everywhere when this album came out.

Even with that, I think I might pass and elect to get some store credit on this one...

not sure if this one was posted or not yet!

apparently half-speed mastered by Barry Grint and cut at 45 RPM
I like those specs. This is an album I love dearly, but it being pressed at GZ gives me pause.

Gonna skip it for now, and wait to see if there are widespread issues like there have been the past 3 months.

It's weird that I never landed on Grizzly Bear during the 2000s indie band craze.

Like, Interpol, BSS, TVOTR, Bloc Party, Decemberists, New Pornographers, Stars, basically every BSS offshoot, etc etc...but never once did I listen to Grizzly Bear. Going back to it now though, had I listened to it back then I probably would've enjoyed it more than I am right now.

I couldn't escape them in NY haha. I remember I got to see them live at a show put on by NY Mag at Hammerstein Ballroom. It was a co-headlining gig with Grizzly Bear and The National. And it was hosted by Stella (Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain). Great show but kind of a lot of gloomy songs for what was supposed to be a party haha

You haven't experienced "gloomy" until you've heard City and Colour play at a festival during a rainstorm. Honestly suprised it wasn't a mass-suicide event.

Just picked up the 15 year anniversary of Horn of Plenty and Yellow House so I might as well get this one! Probably grab it for add-on price and swap for credit on my main track. I need to keep building my VMP clubhouse so bring on the replacements!!

If they were going to try and sell a 2009 album as essential that is really a "must have" for a limited audience, in the hopes of expanding the musical tastes of the rest of us...at least they could have picked something that doesn't immediately transport me to the "Belle and Sebastian" scene from High Fidelity and turn me into Barry.

Mastodon's Crack the Skye or Dino Jr.'s Farm comes to mind.

OOPS - this isn't the "hot takes thread" is it? 😁 😜

We both know there's NO way they would do Mastodon or Dino Jr as an essentials album. I mean they would probably do Belle & Sebastian before they did either of those two titles.

I don't hate Grizzly Bear but am probably skipping out on this one. I just won't spin it enough.

You mean every release after There is Nothing Left to Lose didn't do that?
No, this was just awful. There's Rock n Roll drunk and there's "Put on a goddamn sloppy mess of a show" drunk. He was definitely the later.

Never go see a band you loved growing up in your adulthood: Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden were all terrible disappointments. NIN was the only thing close to being great.

Actually this is not true.

Wu, Public Enemy and Rage Against the Machine were all fantastic.
