Vinyl Storage Recommendation

So I’m in the same boat as others. I’m almost done finishing up my basement and looking for storage solutions. I’m trying to find storage for my kids stuff and top, my records.

wife and I have looked into IKEA bestas on the bottom for extra storage , then kallaxs on top. Worried about weight though:(

Besta tend to bend with too much weight on them. I actually currently have one best and a few eked cubes on them, and it's not pretty. Maybe a Kallax horizontally placed on the Besta would work better.

Eket is fine, but for higher than usual LPs and boxsets, it doesn't work. Otherwise really sturdy.

what size eket? i put together 2 for a 1x2 and it was such a pain. levinging the legs took days of trial and error

18 2x4 units and four 1x2 units, plus several single units (which actual don't really work for 12" records). They're definitely more work to assemble, but after putting a few of them together, I got the hang of it. Unfortunately, I don't think they make the wooden base / legs unit anymore, and the metal legs they offer now don't provide any support for the bottom shelf.

Are those wooden bases part of the Eket or did you install that afterwards? Looks pretty nice
 
I just maxed out my first 4x4 Kallax this past weekend and am contemplating my next move for storage. We just moved into a new apartment and the last tenant left this big ol thing in here but the shelves currently aren’t deep enough for 12”, the records would jut out over the edge about an inch or so. Would this cause long term issues for my records in terms of sleeve wear or would they be fine jutting out? Alternatively, I may ask the landlord if I can throw it on the curb and put a big Kallax or Eket in that space.F9CD5438-AFF2-446C-BEDF-1BD513EF2214.jpeg

We ended up grabbing 2 double bestas for the bottom storage for kids stuff, then a wooden countertop on top of bestas then 2 3x4 kallaxs to sit vertically...of course these will be heavily secured to the wall...hopefully all will be well 😳

That cabinet adds character and would be cool if it could work for you. I don't think I'd hesitate to store records on shelving they overhung by an inch. I can't see how that would hurt anything, but I could be wrong. Would you be able to close those doors with records on the shelves? If not, that probably argues for putting it out on the curb (looks big though!), but if yes, then you have extra protection from dust.

I’d have to take the doors off which would be easy enough! Maybe I’ll give that a shot for starters!

This is what it will look like when it’s done and with another kalkax and will have a countertop in between the bestas and malice..should I be worried about collapsing...be honest ?

You mean like the hanging anchors, 1 in each corner? That might be good enough as long as it's not just the one corner "don't fall over" anchor. Will you be able to locate it so those are in studs?

If you don't think 4 anchors are enough you can always put a plywood back on and run a bunch of screws through that into all the studs behind it. Or just buy more anchors that will work.

Thanks...after thinking about this and talking it over with the Mrs and father in law...I’ll be securing kalkax with a few massive l brackets and I can actually access the wall behind it to reinforce if need be

I wouldn't feel comfortable stacking those. I have a 3x4 Kallax full up with records, and it weighs a ton. Had to slide it out from the wall the other day to reach an outlet.

Although, if you build a tabletop between the two, and secure the tabletop into the wall, that'll take some weight off the bottom cabinets.

Yeah, after talking through the ordeal, this was mentioned, sort of like a countertop. we were discussing 4 or 5 huge L brackets under each kallax to help lighten the load too

i have no idea how all of this will help though. all my stupid mind goes to is that it wont help at all and how will this all dispense the weight:)

Those are good ideas. If you have access behind that wall, beef up the studs so they don't warp. Predrill holes, and get sturdy 3 incb construction screws.

You could always lay the kallax on its side, to better disperse the weight over a greater area on those lower cabinets. I know some folks frown on this because the potential for collapse, but I have a 2x4 kallax on its side with amp, turntable, sacd player, tape deck on top. I added some plywood as a backing to stiffen up the whole shelf. Added L shaped metal brackets on the corners as well and its very study.
