Definitive Audiophile pressings

Forgive me, but if you’re spending $1000/month on food, and getting as many records as you are it seems like the only thing you’re sacrificing is your financial stability and path to an easier breezier future in exchange for pleasure. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say “I still want to live week to week”. I watched my parents and their parents live week to week and saw the discord and pain that created in their lives. Living week to week was the hardest and most stressful time for me and is something I wouldn’t wish upon anyone. The sacrifice I spoke of that helped set me up for success was only getting one record a month when I wanted 20 and putting the other $75-$50 away into savings, or eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or whatever was left in the pantry when I was hungry as opposed to reaching for my phone and dropping $30 on lunch. I’m saving so I can start a family, buy a home, and travel on a whim without worrying if it will derail me financially, I find that realizing every dollar that I spend is a dollar that I’m taking away from that vision to be a helpful motivator. That being said, I have no idea how much you make but if you’re living paycheck to paycheck while still making what you refer to as good money then something is probably wrong with your spending habits, not just that they differ from someone else’s but they may be actively sabotaging you. I only write this from a place of love, I want to see you be able to get to a place where you can afford vinyl with out it coming at such a potential cost towards your future, because what seems fun and innocent now is likely to be looked back upon as a big “Doh!” In the future.
Yeah, I think I kind of am sacrificing my financial stability now from what you’ve just said! I kind of enjoy living week to week because it’s exciting and every weekly paycheck means like a fresh new week for me to budget on what I can spend my money on during that week! I just got my quarterly car registration bill, so I’ll have to have a few cheaper weeks to make sure I can pay that bill off!

I think purchasing one record a month when you want to purchase much more is a really good sacrifice! The fact that you’ll be able to still travel and enjoy a bit of everything is really good! I am someone that’s never saved up for something long term; I travelled for 7 years continuously so I would save up hardcore for 2-3 months whilst living with my parents and then travel 2-3 months and then repeat! I’ve never saved up long term so I think that’s why I enjoy living week to week.

With my spending habits, it is a bit risky living week to week but I enjoy it because like I said before, every week is like a fresh week with budgeting and it’s exciting seeing going to different restaurants and seeing which ones are more worth it for me (I really like exploring my spending habits in regards to food; takeaway, dining out and what I get for lunch on my work break)!

I want to definitely still afford vinyl whilst being comfortable; I’m not there yet because I live week to week. But that would be nice having savings whilst still consuming what you love! It’ll happen one day in the future, but as I’m new to living out of home, I’m in no rush to achieve that! But yes, I think it’s subconsciously a goal in my head!

Did everyone’s Louis Meets Oscar Peterson records have that horrible vocal distortion? I saw Michael Fremer mentioned it as a recording issue, but just curious if that’s the case with everyone here
Yeah I returned it and never looked back. It sounded horrible. I don’t get why they even released it.

You really should put some money away for a rainy day. Maybe start by setting up an automatic withdrawal to a savings account of say10-15% every pay, then it won’t be missed and your savings will grow. I know when you are young the future doesn’t seem so important but it comes quicker than you think. People in general waste so much money on stuff that does nothing for them, if you cooked even 1/2 your meals that would be a big saving, just stuff like stocking up on essentials when on special, buying cheapest toilet paper might save you $5 a week, but that’s $260 a year or $2600 every 10 years and that’s 1 item. Only buying coffee out 2 times a week might save $15 a week or $750 a year!! Endless possibilities to save. Anyway if you want to chat or some more info DM me and I can give you some things to check out.
Awww thanks for the message! I think that would be a really good idea setting an automatic withdrawal with my account! I can’t do it now because I need to be more confident with saving money but I’d like to do that in the future; 5% automatic withdrawal per week! I’ll actually surprise myself with how much I can save whilst still living a high standard of life!

I’ll try and find the motivation to cook more for sure! When I change jobs, I want to cook once a week! And yes, I definitely stock up on specials in regards to bathroom stuff and a few groceries! When Coles or Woolworths have coconut water for half price, I buy like 10 bottles and when Chemist Warehouse my body wash and eau de toilette on sale, I’ll stock up too! I love a good sale!

I think I’m very fortunate that I don’t drink coffee or alcohol or soft drinks (just water or coconut water) because that saves me a lot of money! Like the guys I work with drink quite a lot alcohol every night and they smoke cigarettes too!

I took a sickie Friday and because of Easter Monday, I only worked 3 days this week. So I can’t put any money away for savings next week (apart from rent money). But from the week after, I’m going to start fresh and I’m going to try and out AUD$50 away every week! And I’m going to stop going to bars every weekend too because I spend so much on drinks there and it’s not worth it for me!

If you committed to the automatic weekly withdrawal, you'd wouldn't be seeing that money and wouldn't have to make frequent, conscious decisions to save. Also, this wouldn't in any way affect the excitement of each week presenting itself as a new adventure in spending your paycheck!

Mmmmm that’s a good point actually! Because I’ll have a bit less more money each week, it wouldn’t really affect my “excitement of how to spend my money each week” mentality! Like I’m kinda excited to see what I can do with a 3 working day pay week, for when I get paid on Thursday! Since moving out, I’ve worked 4-5 days every week! So if I can live quite a bit comfortably on a 3 days work worth of pay, then I’ll be really happy! 😅🥰

Exactly! And even though it's true we always can save more, if you are putting something away each week, that voice (you may or may not hear) that interrupts your moment-to-moment joy to ask: "are you sure you shouldn't be saving some money?" won't have quite as much a basis for the question! :D

Ok done! I’m actually going to try and do this on my own from not next Thursday’s pay, but the Thursday pay after!

This is what my pay is going to be at a minimum wage, after tax, when I work 5 days a week with no overtime (strictly 8 hour shifts). And this is how I plan on managing it (I’ve done it before but it gets a bit messy because I go out and then spend $120-$150 when I go out - but no more of that!)

Weekly pay - $1000

Rent - $300
Car Park - $20
Electricity - $20
Hot Water - $15
Broadband - $15
Car Registration - $20
Petrol - $70
Public Transport - $30
Bathroom + Laundry stuff - $30
Gym - $20

So that leaves me with just a bit over $450 to spend on leisurely things! This is how I have mapped out in my head how that would be spent;

Food court lunch money = $100 per week ($20 allowance for each day for lunch)

Monday - $35 for dinner
Tuesday - $35 for dinner
Wednesday - $30 for dinner
Thursday - $50 for dinner (some nights will be cheap $20 nights, others will be more cocktail eating yummy food $80 nights)
Friday - Super cheap dinner / eat at my parents
Saturday - $30 for brunch (cheap dinner / parents for dinner)
Sunday - $30 for brunch & $20 for dinner in a suburb/non inner city suburb

= ($330 for food)

What do I do left with the $130?!

$50 for vinyl per week (this will afford me two add-ons for VMP/three ROTM’s per month, + one VMP exclusive and one RSD release each month).

$50 for groceries!

$30 - Put away for savings! 🤓✅

So, what do you think of this Russ? This plan is very similar to my spending habits but recently I’ve been earning around $1100-$1200 a week because of overtime, so that’s why I’ve been going out Friday and Saturday nights but I don’t want to do that anymore because it’s not so much me. Only once every fortnight would I go out! This is a plan on $1000 a week which is the minimum I’d get in a normal working week with no overtime. So if I do overtime, I can try and put even more away for savings and that means I will have more flexibility!

I have the Music On Vinyl (MOV) pressing for Donny Hathaway’s Live and it’s not that good (purchased it 3-4 years ago when I was not a vinyl nerd at all)!

Does anyone have any information on what this upcoming of Donny Hathaway “Live” RSD release? Any pressing details and if it’s cut from the original tapes/or if it’s a Ryan Smith or Kevin Gray remaster!?

I’m really curious because Live by Donny Hathaway is one of my all-time favourite live albums and having a very high quality pressing of the recording would be excellent! Spinning audiophile live recording pressings is always such a joy!

I was tempted last summer to buy a Boler and make it into my home office
beverly-beach.jpg
It even has a box outside for the gimp.

It becomes VERY prominent on the last three tracks of Side A, after that it’s not too noticeable!
So mine actually sounds pretty good - beginning of side A sounds amazing, last couple of tracks have a few cases of what sounds almost like over modulation but still listenable for sure.

Look, I'm a lot older than you and don't live in Australia so I have no idea as to food expenses. But on no planet should 1/3 of your income go to eating out. Nor should you spend 5% of your income in one day on eating out (see your Sunday).

By my calculations, you are eating 12 meals out a week. That's a bit much even if you were earning 4-5x that income.

@TenderLovingKiller® is right, I feel just like Suze Orman after that post.

Theres always more records to buy. Always.

Prioritizing a budget can also mean prioritizing spending more time with your collection.

The RSD a release of Donny Live at the Bitter End from a few years ago is fantastic. I forget if it’s alternate takes from the Donny Live album or if they use some of the same cuts but it’s really awesome.

Looked it up the other day and was shocked at how pricey it’s gotten now though.

Does anyone own Hiatus Kaiyote, Choose your Weapon on vinyl that would care to comment if the sound is a jump up from hi-res the streaming? (Or generally, is it a great sounding record?)

There is a lot going on in that record, but I don't know anything on how it was recorded and if there is a gain to be had on the vinyl. (Outside of all the normal joy...). Thx.
I have the MOV pressing and I know nothing about its pedigree. How it sounds via streaming vs on vinyl is a YMMV kind of equation. That said, on my particular setup, vinyl wins. This is definitely not a Phoebe Bridgers Punisher situation where streaming is the clear winner re resolution. I think if you generally prefer vinyl to streaming, this record will fall in line as well.

Honestly - just my opinion - the Live At The Bottom Line that came out a few years ago on RSD is the one to seek out. Duplicates one side of Live, and the rest is superior performances. Great sounding as well.
