June 2019 Vinyl Challenge

Day 10 - Perfect?

This is the perfect album; in fact, I think it’s the zenith of musical studio work. Not even my favorite Floyd album but I recognize it as their magnum opus and the greatest studio album of all time.

What a fucking journey this album is. And maybe I’ve eaten too many psychedelics to this album, but man does it encapsulate life so well—the journey from birth to death, and the hardships along the way.

Anywho, enough rambling. “Time’s” intro is playing and I’ve got CRAZY goosebumps. This album will always be a very emotional trip for me. So many good and bad memories to this one. Thank you Pink Floyd.

“So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.”

Day 12 - Those Were the Days
Sometimes a song can take us back to really specific times in life.
For today, play an album that features a song that brings up a sweet memory from your past.

When I was growing up my parents were pretty strict about the music I was allowed to listen to. But for my birthday one year, my friend bought me a Linkin Park CD and my mom couldn't say no to it. Because of that, I got really interested in music and they became my favorite band for a while.

Back in 2014, during summer vacation from teaching at the university I decided to take a trip to Japan. I flew into Sapporo , the next day I picked up my 21day rail pass and then went and spent the next 24days traveling from Sapporo down to Nagasaki stoping at various cities, mountains and volcanoes along the way. This album was part of the soundtrack during my climb up Mt. Fuji as well as during my climb up Mt. Misen, so now every time I hear this album I feel like I'm right back on those mountains, living in paradise.

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

This album reminds me of driving in my car the first summer after getting my license. I listened to my CD copy through a special cassette tape adapter that was plugged into the headphone jack of my discman 😂
It also reminds me of the summer I met my now wife, an album we both loved and grew up with.

This is also the first record I ever bought, in 2005. I bought it off eBay for like 20 bucks sealed - I don’t even remember why. I learned later it was a first pressing on orange vinyl. If I had to save one material thing from a fire, it’d probably be this.

Day 7 - Should You Have That?

Promo's are my thing! Instead of finding one to spin I'm going with a bootleg instead. I wanted to spin "And the Walls Came Down" a live bootleg of Pink Floyd performing the wall live but due to time constraints I'm going with the Band

The Band - Live Band

I forgot just how bad this sounds...should have gone with the wall

I love this album so much, all of it. It was probably my most played CD for the end of grade 12. "In a sweater poorly knit" is one of my favourite songs and closers of all time.

The Band - Stage Fright

Back in my early 20s, most summers during university I was a server at a restaurant. I met my now-best friend there, and most of the people we worked with were our age and super fun. It didn't matter what night, we were gonna go do something after work. At some point we became regulars at a different bar's Monday night karaoke, and that's always the first thing I think of when I look back on my time working there. This girl Kim and I were both huge Band fans, and we'd duet "The Shape I'm In." That song will probably always remind me of her and those good summer days.

Okay, here goes!

Day 5 Catchup:

Im lumping this in with Lucky 13 because you dont normally find something this good at a random Goodwill and I don't think I even own 30 records at this point 😂

Day 6: Not a record I'd normally show off, but it's not bad and it fits the bill! My best friend's mom from growing up in Puerto Rico found out I was getting into vinyl and brought a few records for me to have last time I was there:

Day 7: This was another Goodwill pickup. Not a classic, by any means, but bad for 50 cents!

It is such a powerful song and a perfect ending to a marvelous record. There isn't one bad song on the album, and I love the breakup with the Spider poems, gonna have to put a couple of these songs on in the jqbx later today

Day 12 - Takes Me Back

Imagine Dragons- Night Visions

I know this is a weird one but this album meant alot to 15/16 year old Matt. It was the first album I ever named my personal AOTY and it was at an AWOLNATION/Imagine Dragons show that I decided to start coming out
