Oh I agree the complaints are valid. I personally haven't had any issues (haven't received any damaged records from what I can remember and all my backordered albums were locked in price-wise even if prices went up on a repress).Let’s separate the gear side out. It’s clearly a different experience and not relevant.
The complaints are all valid. From an international standpoint I have found them to be unpleasant and dismissive to deal with. They clearly aren’t packaging their records right. The A&R stinks. The other shops doing that is wrong and leaves a bad taste. MD doing it is far far far worse! They own the damn label making the records, they’re abusing their market position. Then the rotten cherry on the shit pie? Cancelling orders and then re-listing at the flipper price. That is absolutely one of the most disgusting business practices I’ve heard in a long time.
Fuck them, fuck them hard.
I hate that they are doing the Music Matters thing of jacking up prices on the last few copies of albums that won't get repressed. I refuse to buy them at the higher price even if I want the album. When I see a price jacked up, I see if I can pick up that album at a local shop or somewhere else at MSRP. And hearing about the cancelling an order then listing at a higher price is really really awful. I'd be giving them absolute hell over that one and reporting their business practices if that was me.
In terms of MoFi buying, I use MD for backorders since they are the only place to do so. Typically I buy MoFis elsewhere because I can sometimes find them for cheaper with coupons. I don't like relying solely on MD for MoFis because their practices lately have been terrible. It's really frustrating because I used to really like MD for MoFi purchases. They are giving me lots of reasons to shop for MoFis elsewhere though...
