Pre-Order Thread

Let’s separate the gear side out. It’s clearly a different experience and not relevant.

The complaints are all valid. From an international standpoint I have found them to be unpleasant and dismissive to deal with. They clearly aren’t packaging their records right. The A&R stinks. The other shops doing that is wrong and leaves a bad taste. MD doing it is far far far worse! They own the damn label making the records, they’re abusing their market position. Then the rotten cherry on the shit pie? Cancelling orders and then re-listing at the flipper price. That is absolutely one of the most disgusting business practices I’ve heard in a long time.

Fuck them, fuck them hard.
Oh I agree the complaints are valid. I personally haven't had any issues (haven't received any damaged records from what I can remember and all my backordered albums were locked in price-wise even if prices went up on a repress).

I hate that they are doing the Music Matters thing of jacking up prices on the last few copies of albums that won't get repressed. I refuse to buy them at the higher price even if I want the album. When I see a price jacked up, I see if I can pick up that album at a local shop or somewhere else at MSRP. And hearing about the cancelling an order then listing at a higher price is really really awful. I'd be giving them absolute hell over that one and reporting their business practices if that was me.

In terms of MoFi buying, I use MD for backorders since they are the only place to do so. Typically I buy MoFis elsewhere because I can sometimes find them for cheaper with coupons. I don't like relying solely on MD for MoFis because their practices lately have been terrible. It's really frustrating because I used to really like MD for MoFi purchases. They are giving me lots of reasons to shop for MoFis elsewhere though...

They're giving me lots of reasons to just not buy new MoFis full stop. After Oh Mercy I’ve a few old ones to buy secondary but I’m feeling hugely negative towards that whole company of late.

The post above by stating that an order was cancelled as out of stock, only to still be in stock at the flipper price, is almost the last nail in their coffin as a reputable company IMO.

Fair enough. I know I won't make the statement that I'll never buy from them again, because I know I will when a title comes up that I want. For now though, as we have talked about, not many of the upcoming releases really float my boat, so I'm mostly in it for the restocks now and buying used older pressings from MoFi.

Same. This is super disappointing to me. I always liked Musicdirect alot, their shipping and CS is great but had no idea they were owned by Mofi. Now I get MMJ vibes from them.
I thought I was lucky to grab a skull n roses from them for $100 shipped but now that I honestly am somewhat regretful I supported them. Also just saw they boosted it up to $125 since.

Im all for great audiophile releases and the companies that do it. But with more and more popping up, I have no reason to support the ones that practically are flippers of their own products.

Other way around, MD own mofi, bought them when they were about to go bust.

But yeah the principle is the same, I find it more disappointing because they’re capable of putting out a product I like, it’s not like some other people who make it easy to boycott them.

That said their A&R has been worse than ever of late so maybe it’s not going to be an issue for me regardless.

I stand corrected. I just searched my inbox and apparently Loma sent this email on 12/28:

"Unfortunately, due to additional manufacturing delays, your order of Margo Price Vinyl and/or merch is now expected to ship by 01/29/20"

I assume they meant 1/29/21
aaaaand i just got a shipping confirmation

A trend of the worst kind. And it is getting more common. A couple months ago I would have said “I’ve been buying from them for decades; one of the best on the web”. Now I would say “Generally an excellent place to preorder MoFi titles but be very careful when buying older titles.”

It is what it is...one, two, three:

Thats shocking, absolutely shocking. I’d love it if someone with a bit of clout and influence in the area ran a story on it and invited them to comment.

It’s also frustrating that it was $35 to begin with and they had already jacket it up to $50

I would post this shit in social media and call them ...absolute garbage

Ok so I just found this:

And I "ordered" a copy from them and was able to use PayPal. Shipping over 40 was free...

I'm nervous about this one, but since I got to use PayPal I went for it. If this is indeed legit then I just scored a vinyl copy of the Your Name soundtrack by Radwimps on vinyl. That's been a white whale album for a while now and prices are never this cheap. This almost seems like the original price from when it was first released in Japan with international shipping and such.

BTW, it's still listed on this site and it looks like you can get multiple copies.

You all think this is legit?
OMG I got a shipping confirmation from the seller for this last night! Am I really about to get my copy of this amazing soundtrack? 😳😬😁

Really sucks to see that Music Direct is doing that. I've given them so much business over the years between gear and records, but going to have to think twice about it moving forward. The jacking up prices alone is one thing, and I don't love that either, but to cancel an order and then relist at a higher price is so so bad.

Thank you so much!! I found Caroline on Spotify a couple months ago and I love her.
Also, @debianlinux this is on my official buy list. You have been warned.
I'm the guy who says this every time someone mentions they like Pang - but since you have confirmed that Caroline Polachek is new to you, do yourself a huge favor and listen to the three Chairlift albums, especially Something. Chairlift is her previous band with Patrick Wimberly. Caroline is an amazing vocalist and you'll just get more of what you want in those records. I still have fond memories of seeing their last two shows as Chairlift ever. Her vocals abilities are just incredible, which is confirmed when you see her live.

Another example of “buyer beware”. My past experiences were positive over such a long period of time that I didn’t even notice I was initially being overcharged until I was posting the screenshots. 😖
