It's just they claimed free jazz when at most it was an old man doing eastern jazz music
There was no old man involved. Miller was 30 when they recorded it, the rest where students as well. I think they won a student jazz competition and earned the recording.
I did not particularly enjoy the record and did not find it a good classics pick but a novelty. But I found the criticism aimed at lloyd miller when it was chosen as rotm a little unfair. It was an amateur project and not supposed to be more.There was also the accusation of appropriation in the air, which seems unfair looking at millers life, because i see him more as someone who was interested and immersed himself into middle eastern culture and tried to teach people about it.
 
I liked both this and Oriental Jazz. :(
Same! I really enjoyed the Sarah Webster Fabio! I played the record back to back with Camille Yarbrough’s The Iron Pot Cooker last month and it was amazing! Just some great spoken word poetry with great production! Like it’s such a vibe!

I highly recommend that Craft reissue RSD pressing of The Iron Pot Cooker! It’s AAA, Kevin Gray mastered and sounds superb! Just love how expressive Camille’s vocals are and the dirty funk/sex tunes and also the more moody, spiritual, reflective and sensual tunes! The album just has a very political, woke, real-life tone as well which is executed really nicely too! The Iron Pot Cooker is 100% my favourite RSD grab of 2020! 🔥🔥🔥

The Hawk Flies High came in yesterday — love the thumping bottom end on this. It's in mono and has the cover art both just like the first pressing. I was kinda worried about the SQ of how this might turn out after hearing the muddy Spotify/iTunes/streaming version of this album, but the all analog vinyl mastering sounds much clearer to my ears. This is a great record and an excellent mastering job again. We don't get many bebop/swing style releases so this is a treat if you're into that style of jazz.
 
Oriental Jazz fan here. I like many of the compositions and as someone that has been listening closely to this music for a very long time (including stints writing about it), I enjoyed finding something new (to me). I love Grant Green and Miles as much as anyone else but I'm always looking for music in the margins. It's actually one of the things that brought me on board this ship. I think the real problem here is once again, the reliance on Storf or whomever made the proclamation that this is free jazz. Whomever said this is an idiot and knows absolutely nothing about this music.

NOTE: Still on the fence as to whether to reup for another year.

Im on board with what you said here. I love delving into the more obscure releases and jazz is my favourite genre anyway, so I really liked the Oriental Jazz pick. People complained about the audio but thats just the way it was recorded at the time. 80% of Charlie Parker's releases were poor quality (the Dean Benedetti recordings are a key example) and they are still regarded as fantastic records of historic interest. Storf clearly messed up with the free-jazz comment and I agree with you that it completely flipped everyone's expectations of the album going into it.
