Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

You lost me at "throw out liner notes" 😭😭😭😭

Nooooo! My whole childhood and adulthood I am spending carrying on like a child has been built on reading the liner notes. I want to know everything, who wrote who produced who arranged who plays the instruments, what sampled was used etc.
I absolutely love liner notes. Its one of the things I hate about streaming that they don't have them. Usually I'm now on wiki or genius while playing a track/album these days until I get the hardcopy in hand
Yup as a kid, I had the liner notes in my hand everytime I sat for some serious listening and as an adult It’s exactly the same only LP size as opposed to CD size.

Love it. This is me 100%. I spent my early years as a teen wondering who is this Kayne West guy ( yes pronouncing it Caine/Kane) until I realised it was Kanye 😂 and that was down to liner notes. Liner notes has got me into so many other artists & albums. Used to love getting my hands on a cd and counting how many tracks a certain producer did. I have the utmost respect for these guys because of it

Don't you just hate when something comes bare minimum just cover & lps nothing else and the only information on the back is the tracklist? Breaks my heart 😂
That doesn't bother me at all as I throw out the extras, but now I think I'm gonna start keeping a lot of the liner notes, especially as you can see what songs are sampled! I get so much joy when I spin an album and realise that the song I'm listening to, was a song that got sampled by another song I know!

I was spinning Camille Yarbrough yesterday and when Take Yo Praise played, I was filled with joy because Fatboy Slim's Praise You heavily sampled that song, and it was just beautiful listening to the original! Same case as Al Green's Green is Blues! Played that last night and just loved that a few of the tracks on that album were sampled from classic Notorious B.I.G. and Ghostface Killah songs!

So yeah, now you made me realise that the liner notes are quite important! Wish I never threw out 500+ liner notes now... But in the end, I care mostly about the sound quality of the pressing in the end. The jacket can have a bend etc, but I care about the condition of the actual vinyl disc itself, and how great the pressing sounds.

Missed opportunity for sure. That was almost never the case with CDs, even it is was a single bi-fold album art you still got like 3 other squares worth of art and/or Info. Also loved the occasional secret additional art stuck behind the CD tray on some releases (a’la Radiohead’s Kid A) that and “hidden tracks” are the only things I miss about CDs.

i'm going to keep the PUTS version because i found out that all i'd be saving with the fatbeats version is a whopping dollar.. including shipping
And the colour variant does look really sweet too!

Also, I'm quite surprised you like the People Under The Stairs album pick, as that is a very lengthy album! And it's an album that is nowhere near as diverse as an album like Erykah Badu's Mama's Gun in my opinion!

Happy you dig the People Under The Stairs ROTM pick though!

But if you really wanna experience these 90s & 2000s albums as intended, CDs are the only way, flaws & all 😂

I don’t think the PUTS Black pressing is exclusive to FatBeats, I believe it’s just a standard reissue. Chances are you would be able to acquire copies for other online stores or even your LRS for a cheaper price still.

but it bumps in the whip and i will see if i like it more (fuck skits of course)

erykah just had the issue that every song felt connected so i wondered if i was just listening to one song for 15 minutes

Redman's Muddy Waters bumps in the whip hard too! 🔥🔥🔥

Fair enough with Erykah Badu! Maybe the album just isn't for you. If you ever listen to the album again, I hope you love it!

i mostly just dont like that didn't cha know, My Life, and ...& on were all connected with no pause to know the song is over... so i was wondering "how long is this song again? how far am i?"

Strangely enough I grew up with CDs but at a certain point I took them all to my LRS and exchanged them all for like $50 worth of store credit and I still have no regret about it. I even still have a small collection (approximately 50) cassette tapes but I have zero interest in CDs at all. I would probably collect MiniDiscs before I went back to CD (strictly for the novelty of it all). The only device I have in my home currently that I could listen CD is a small boombox and the only reason i have that is for the built in cassette player..

ahhhh gotcha! Yeah, the songs do link into each other like that! I guess you can see it as a nice jam session, but at the same time, I know what you mean! But ain't nothing wrong with a lengthy track, look at some of Pink Floyd's songs for example, the first song on Wish You Were Here, it is 13+ minutes and is split into five different sections. I guess you can see it like that with Mama's Gun maybe!

Would love to do a listening session of Mama's Gun with you in person as I really adore the album!

I bought new releases on CD until 2016. I’ve tried to get rid of them multiple times since but can’t pull the trigger 😂 I have over 600 CDs that I’ve all ripped to a hard drive (with all the skits edited out of course!). I’ve put all the cases in storage and just keep the CDs & liner notes in sleeves that fit in 2 small boxes. I have a CD player hooked up to my receiver so I can still listen to them as the artists intended ;) I still have so many CDs that I don’t own on vinyl (and probably a lot that I wouldn’t want).

Dark Side Of The Moon is pretty overrated but it is an amazing album and I love it! I love listening to that album!

But yeah, I totally get if Mama's Gun doesn't do much for you. It's also not as accessible as Baduizm. Like Baduizm is more like good kid, m.A.A.d City and Mama's Gun is like To Pimp A Butterfly, in that Mama's Gun is more challenging, ambitious and shows a bigger artistic leap compared to the previous album.
