Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

I'm sure they're great speakers but I don't like the look of them 🤷‍♂️

I love Totems, mate. Get on it like a car bonnet if that's what you like. The only question i'd ask is whether, like my Forests, they need a proper hefty old load of power to really get them going.

Apparently they're high efficiency for easy amplifier compatibility.

Just got off the horn with my local dealer and I'm gonna go audition some loudspeakers after work. He carries, ELAC, Bowers & Wilkes, Paradigm, M&K and Totem.

FWIW, I really love my Bowers CM9's. They dont make these anymore but it was back when they were using kevlar.

I am a relative newbie - been collecting and listening to vinyl for about 4 years. My gear is listed in my signature. I want to maximize its potential and am willing to spend on upgrades, but don't have an unlimited budget.

I'm looking for recommendations on how to isolate the cause of an audible hiss and/or advice on what to upgrade to get rid of it. I guess either way, I'm curious as to what are recommended upgrades for me anyway.

  • I hear an audible hiss when I have receiver volume up high and preamp turned on - without the turntable playing anything.
  • Turning the preamp off I hear a loud "bump of the microphone" like sound followed by the hiss slowly fading to nothing
  • I have the ground cable connected between TT and preamp
  • It doesn't seem that my problem is related to static as turning preamp back on and off again gives the same result. Also, I have a Zerostat and that has not seemed to have any impact on the problem.

Welcome. First two issues are normal:

Hiss- The Mani is a good entry level phono stage. It’s not going to be particularly quiet. That comes when you get into upscale models.

Turning the preamp off- this is the power supply discharging. Normal. Leave it powered on (mine doesn’t even have a power switch) or turn it off after the Yamaha.

Thanks! So, as far as upgrading to a quieter preamp, do you have any recommendations for under $300?

The Vincent PHO-8 has had a recent price reduction to $249 and appears to be getting replaced by an updated (yet inferior in my opinion) model.

This should be noticeably quieter than your Mani and sound better too.
