Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

sadly the hard part of those saying "just get mofis and AP instead"... i mean sure they have some very quality stuff but not everyone is going to want the henry belafonte and classical and jazz a lot of AP does.. and im not BIG on a lot of the classic rock that mofi does beyond dylan

VMP did pressings of popular records for people like me more into trendier art and more modern picks
Spot on there. MoFi do have Weezer still, but that's about it except the new wave stuff they did on the silver label. I wish they would do more things like Pixies, or at least repress them for people who didn't get them. They definitely do a lot of snooozer dad rock.

audiophile hip hop reissues are completely ignored and its not like VMP really does a great job there either...

the highest level pressing they did for one was slowthai since it was pressed by QRP, and besides that snoop dogg sounded fantastic... i want a hip hop title pressed on a high quality record... give us 2pac or kanye or the beastie boys on a high quality pressing (like how KSG is on RTI)

if mofi got loveless the world would shit itself

The Loveless reissue a few years back is excellent and audiophile, but a lot of people balked at the overseas shipping and slept on it. It's a shame he let it go out of print again immediately. I'm still ready to throw my money at an EP box, but maybe that'll happen in the next 20 years?

Now I’m actually nervous I won’t get the records I already ordered from them.

$43 for a John Mayer record. I can think of very few VMP "Essentials" releases that I would pay $43 for. I am the furthest I've been from the moment I first opened the VMP box my wife got me for Christmas 2017 with Sorcerer by Miles Davis in it. That feeling is completely gone now.

I have around 1,000 records. I can’t think of 5 that I’ve paid $43 or more for.

Re-subbed with a 3 for 2 deal to get Spiritualized. Depending on what the next three essentials were I may have conveniently forgot to cancel. Not now. Insane.

The first thing I did was create a reminder on my phone to cancel before my subscription renews.

If you like VMP's curation, you can follow along with what they release for free and then buy it elsewhere. Bandcamp, Bullmoose, your local... It's extremely rare that they have any TRUE exclusives now. I started buying "exclusives" through other avenues like those listed and every single time I have gotten my album way before VMP sent theirs out and I paid less.

Exactly, you can still use VMP’s curation. Just last night I ordered a copy of The Magician on Discogs for under $10 (including shipping). There’s no rational reason to crave the “definitive” version of every album (and most VMP releases are far from that, anyway).

Then re-sub for 1 month if it's a title you absolutely need. I've spent $40+ on an album before that I really wanted. But the amount of money (and headaches) you'll save versus trying to convince yourself that you really need one of their ROTMs will be more than worth it. I'd be shocked if they do Channel Orange or Section 80 but if they do one of those, I may hop in for a month. This was the nail in the coffin for me though.

I agree with this too. If VMP presses Channel Orange, I’d rather dip in at the higher monthly price than commit to a longer plan.

Also, since VMP is losing all their last defenders, should we reopen discussion to consolidate their threads? 😂

Brilliant sniping job!

Unpopular opinion- the only reason Frank Ocean is hype is the scarcity. If I could go to amazon and get his album right now no one would care, like what happened with FlyLo's last two albums.

He is so overrated it's absurd.
I think the hype/scarcity has driven up the prices for sure. I guess you could say he's overrated at this point because of how crazy of a stan group he has. I still think the guy is insanely talented though and I love Blonde and CO. He's still one of my favorite current musicians. For every person that is obsessed with Frank, there's a person on the opposite end of the spectrum who seemingly thinks he has no talent simply because they hate how hyped his stans make him.

I think FlyLo’s last two albums sold poorly because A) there were a ton of variants (at least for Flamagra) and they got drip released, B) the initial prices were really high and C) there was little to no build up for the release and marketing was bad. Frank has the whole reclusive artist persona, and the release for Blonde was this great weird build with a surprise second album drop. Watching the live stream was almost like a TV show finale event where so many people were watching, on message boards, trying to see if anybody figured out clues or saw anything new.

He’s the Supreme of vinyl. All hype beast type of shit, the appeal is the limited access.

While I can’t disagree with the fact that exclusivity helps drive the hype, I feel like it’s unfair to think that all music fans are also record collectors.

I think it’s ok to assume that a big majority of his fan base doesn’t even have an idea of how much a copy of Blonde goes for.

Yeah, so many people on this forum think Frank Ocean is overrated! 😢

But I think he's perfectly rated, and is incredibly talented, and Frank Ocean is someone that's never on Social Media or doing interviews etc. He's like Prince in that sense; isn't into the whole social media thing and is more reserved!

I love Frank Ocean so so so much. I love him and cannot wait for his next studio album!

That’s pretty unfair. The mans talent definitely matches the praise, it’s not his fault he’s also soundtracked a generation of sadboi hype beast. I was in love with his music far before he even released vinyl and think it goes without saying he’s one of the most important/influential artists of my generation. Blond was a religious and transcendent experience for me and I know it was the same for many many people, that definitely didn’t happen because he only sold his records on Black Friday. Probably happened because homie made the nastiest mid song beat switch of the 21st century. SICKO MODE WISHES THEY WOULDVE! Just kidding kind of, Blond and Channel Orange AND Nostalgia/Ultra are all like 9/10-10/10s for me

My intention wasn’t to knock his talent at all, just the hype surrounding the vinyl. I can see how that was misconstrued though with my blunt response.
