So I said in my post about folklore that I prob wasn’t gonna buy a physical copy. I changed my tune after a couple more listens.
I chose to get it on CD and the In the Woods variant. I thought that was the coolest artwork.
I think her rollout is interesting with the 8 variants - kinda like a choose-your-own-adventure. Obviously not bespoke but a degree of customization for what you like. I don’t doubt there will be fans that will cop multiple variants and some maybe all eight for ~$200 (if vinyl). If one wants to be cynical, you can call that a cash grab (that is, knowing you‘ll get fans who will buy multiple of, ostensibly, the “same” product). I choose not to be cynical and characterize it as interesting. Of course, that easy for me when I’m one CD and done.

i loved a lot of the max martin-shellback uber-pop that she's put out over the last several albums, but - as per "all too well" and "dear john" - when she's really nailing those middle 8s she's really showing her songwriting class

I am ok with the 8 variants... I got the one that called out most to me before I even heard the album. I am just glad this is back to her form that made me fall for her music all those years ago.

I'm a fan of the cover for the clandestine meetings variant. And I like the back cover and record colors for "running like water." Those are the two I've been eyeing since the shop went up and will probably be what I go with, but browsing through all of theme I keep second guessing myself lol. I'm just indecisive. I do wanna pick up at least one of the CDs too, probably the hide and seek one.

For me it was between Betty's Garden and Stolen Lullabies.... I went with the one that initially caught my eye which was Betty's Garden. The main reason is I have green, I have blue, but I don't have many pink or lavender colored. So I went with that.

I like the back cover and the color of the "in the weeds" variant but for me I mostly enjoy when the record color matches the album art. I'm thinking if I own a combo of the gray variant and the clandestine meetings cover that would be a perfect match for me. So that's my rationale for my choices haha
As for hide and seek, I just like that picture
I swear that’s from an illustrated copy of The Fellowship of the Ring that I have. Something to do with Sam and Frodo seeing elves going to the grey harbour...
