sad, beautiful, tragic: the n&g taylor swift thread

So with the starting of this thread and the release of this new album, I've decided to embark on a journey though the T-Swizzle discography. I only really jumped on the Tay train with 1989 and so most of my knowledge prior to that album is the singles. So I'm gonna try to rectify and give myself an education in Swift. I'll use this thread to post my thoughts on each album as I go along and maybe others will want to discuss the music with me? It's an idea. Either way, it should be a fun dive!

That's an awesome idea! I've only listened to two of her albums in full, and that includes folklore, so I'm really in the dark as well. I'll look forward to your impressions. Maybe you should tell us what you think of folklore to serve as a baseline. :)

Is this a list of Friends episodes?

Well keep in mind this is more or less initial impressions, I've only given it one listen in full so far, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think my only big criticism is that a lot of the production is a bit samey, but the quality of the vocals and lyricism allows me to look past that. I don't think that this album is necessarily her being more "mature" as some have said, but the big difference is she's taking the pen and pointing it away from herself and crafting songs that are more or less stories she's created that feel inspired by her own personal life and feelings. I think that framing makes this album feel much more "mythical" and I think that was the intent. It's easy to see several Taylor albums as concept albums but this feels like one where that is explicitly the case. I know a lot of snobby dude bros seem to think this album was Taylor trying to get "indie cred" or something but I highly doubt she is looking for approval from fans of the National. I think the more organic (if that's the word?) sound of the album just came naturally from being composed in quarantine and reflects the downbeat nature of that kind of isolation. She clearly had plenty of time to reflect and dig deep for some inspiration and pulled out, in my opinion, a really impressive achievement.

Well, talk about delivering! Thank you. That was a great read.

I haven't followed Taylor Swift closely enough to know whether this level of collaboration is new for her, but my sense is that it is new. If so, I see her willingness to work in truly collaborative ways with artists she admires and trusts, including/especially the photographer!, as a sign of maturity.

I'm flattered 😊

I feel like pop music, even more than other genres, is definitely a collaborative form of music what with all the producers and songwriters artists bring in. Unlike others I don't see that as devaluing the music because I dont believe every musician needs to be a one-man-band auteur to make great art. Taylor is a very gifted songwriter and she knows how to get people who help her make her ideas come to life. I know Jack Antonoff, who produced some of this new album, has worked with her in the past, so she seems to trust his vision, but bringing in outside forces such as the members from the National seems to have been the type of collaboration that made this album so different

Favorite tracks from Folklore right now:

The 1
The Last Great American Dynasty
My Tears Ricochet
Seven
August
Invisible String

Those are ones I've already come back to to listen separately from listening to the entire album. But I really enjoy the whole thing.

I love that! I love that you love Taylor Swift now! 😛🙊

Don't worry though, I've got some Britney Spears' on vinyl, if that makes you feel any better! ;)
Hold on there, I don't know that he said he "Loved" Taylor Swift now, lol. I think this album will resonate with more than her fan base, which is probably a good thing. This is the first TS album I've purchased, but I'm familiar with her music and have always liked her earlier stuff, I think 1989 was the 50/50 one that I dropped off interest at.

I've listened to Folklore in it's entirety more than a few times now, in my opinion its a more complete album with a nice beginning to end vibe and tapestry.

Yup, I never said I love her. She is cute but not my type of girl. Typical @NathanRicaud enthusiastic post.

Complete opposite here. 1989 was the album that got me interested. In retrospect I liked Red too. The earlier stuff doesn’t resonate with me but the only one I didn’t like was Reputation. I’m really enjoying this one so far, probably because I think that the songs are stronger for being, as @gap put better than I could, third person narratives rather than being very much in the first person as a lot of her earlier stuff is.
