Television

Started Dead To Me wondering how this could be a show past one season, finished Dead To Me hoping it gets a second season. Of course I should have seen the ending coming. And I already have a feeling how season two is going to go down.

Meanwhile, I’m finally catching up on Barry. Just watched episode 5 (you know the one, with the feral kid). Holy shit it was crazy. One of the most interesting, surprising episodes of TV I’ve seen this year
The thing about Dead to Me is that I saw every single "twist" long before it happened. But as predictable as it was, I highly enjoyed it.

Right - that Barry episode was WILD!!!!!

Recent show rundown

Chernobyl is great
Fleabag is great
Killing Eve S2 was great (especially the last two episodes)
Barry S2 was great (especially the last two episodes)
Brockmire S3 wasnt my favorite season, but still good
Gentleman Jack is good (my wife loves it, but also loves any period piece)
Dead to Me didnt do anything for me through 3 episodes

Tell me more about Gentleman Jack. I am torn about it. I really don't enjoy period pieces. But I think I might enjoy the story.

It's based on the journal (apparently over 4 million words, most of it encrypted) of Anne Lister a lesbian land owner/industrialist who lived in the early 1800s in West Yorkshire, England. Part of the show is her love affair with a younger heiress and part of the show is her running her family estate, and selling off coal from a plot that she owns. Shes very "unladylike" for the times, and is a great character. The actress that plays Yara Greyjoy in GoT does a great job playing her sister. My only complaint is they stay on the love story more than I'd like, since I mostly enjoy the other aspects of the show.

I guess I didn’t think about where it all was headed (dead to me, that is) cause I was just really enjoying the watch. Not a perfect show, but enjoyable, dark, funny, nicely paced.

also how does this even happen

I imagine a lot of people will find episode 4 the hardest to get through. It was like 4 A.M when I watched it (binge watched everything for the first time last night) and even I was pretty shocked by some of the shit in this episode.

I did not make it. When they give the boy a gun and started whistling for the dogs, i turned the TV off. Guess I won't be watching anymore of that show.

i HATE to brag here but, weirdly, very weirdly, I'm a direct descendent. Same surname. When I was a kid my mum used to go on about how "your great, great, great, whatever discovered the North West passage, blah blah...".
I just tuned her out as blathering old mum, who cares.

Turns out she was right.

I almost had a slight heart attack in my brain when I unknowingly tuned in to the telly show for the first time

I had a stress dream last night that SOMEONE STOLE SARGE AND I KNEW WHO IT WAS AND KEPT DEMANDING MY SOUL MATE BACK AND THEY WOULDN'T GIVE HIM BACK TO ME! It was horrifying and agonizing and made me cry in my sleep. AND I BLAME CHERNOBYL!

I'm a little bummed all my shows are wrapping up for the season (and some forever... RIP Speechless), but I'm glad I'll be able to catch up on Netflix stuff and watch more Criterion now.
I know!!! There needs to be more special needs kids and adults in comedies!!

Anyone in the UK watch Years and Years yet?

Terrifying new future drama about where society could be headed, through the eyes of one family. Episode one is fantastic.

American viewers, watch on HBO in June.
OOooooooohhhhhhh, thanks for this.
Anyone watch Expanse? We're pretty into it. I didn't read the books but really appreciate the storytelling and effort put into the visuals. It was a SyFy show but Amazon bought it and I guess will make new seasons at some point. Must have been pretty expensive to produce.
I know that everyone thinks that Battlestar is the best sci fi show ever, but I think the Expanse is better than Battlestar. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the science behind teraforming and how well they do and have thought out the physics of everything. It really blows my mind how well the show is thought out and I love the characters, especially Naomi!!! She kicks so much butt.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Westworld. The themes are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of existential philosophy, most of those themes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Robert's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Zarathustrian literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these themes, to realise that they're not just motifs- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Westworld truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Robert's existential catchphrase "These violent delights have violent ends," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as not-Christopher-Nolan's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Westworld tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
Calm down, Clint. I get what they are trying to do in Westworld, I just find that it gets clunky and drags in places. It's not a bad show, but calling people idiots if they don't like it, that's a bit harsh.

As for my latest obsession, have any of you been watching the Hot Zone mini series on NatGeo? I am through episode 4 and I LOVE it. It's done so well. They make you want to crawl the walls when they show people interacting with others who could have been exposed. Maybe this is just because as a kid, I was in a lab looking through microscopes every time my mom brought me to her work (she worked as a med tech in a vet school lab, so I got to see all sorts of stuff like rabies), but this is such a fun series for me.

I love Westworld and don't think people are idiots who don't like it. I just took the infamous Rick & Morty copypasta and edited it for Westworld~

So you're saying people who don't like Rick & Morty are idiots?

I can't tell if I'm being whooshed or not but the R&M copypasta was meant to mock certain fans of the show who saw it as being exclusively for very smart individuals. I've seen, to a much lesser extent, some people feel that way about Westworld. So I took the R&M copypasta and applied it to Westworld. Does that make more sense now or am I being whooshed?

I recommend Hot Zone the book as well. It's a little dramatized, but nonetheless, the story behind ebola is fucked up.
