Jazz

Sadly, they seem to be quite a bit more expensive to buy in the US since they are imports. I only see it at Acoustic Sounds and its over $30+ shipping. Not sure it's worth it for me to buy one with how bad the reviews are on that specific title.

I haven 't seen any reviews, I got it when ordered something else from JazzMessengers.com. I don't know what they charge for shipping to the states.

Just oredred the 2 Donald Byrd Sam Records for them. Missed out on the Nathan Davies ORTF package, I had it in my basket, just not quick enough.

Ah--that Nathan Davis ORTF is nice. I have that one. I want to get the Byrd records at some point but I have an OG pressing of vol 2 already. I'll see what the shipping on jazzmessengers is like to the US. Thanks!

Their webshop says you can have free shipping to the US for orders of 250€ and more. It might be a good deal if you and a couple of other forum members want to order from them.

Im trying to choose between Hank Mobley - Poppin and Joe Henderson - State of the Tenor vol 2, anyone have a recommendation?

It would be tough to argue outright that one is decidedly better than the other, so basically, you can't go wrong--both are good.

Yea Im sure all the blue notes are great. Im trying to do the 3 for 2 deal on Amazon, so far have Herbie and Andrew Hill and trying to pick one more

Nigeria by Grant Green is my favorite out of all released so far but the Stanley Turrentine album has also been really doing something for me recently!

Depends what you like tbh. State of the Tenor is a sax trio, so sax, bass, drums, which is a particular sound. It's very good and people like it, although the sax trio is not my thing personally, but you should try it out.

My pick for what it’s worth would be Poppin’ for a couple of reasons. Mobley has all original compositions while Henderson plays a lot of standards. Also really like Sonny Clark’s piano work on Poppin’.

My recommendation comes with the caveat that I’m not a huge fan of Henderson’s style. He’s very popular and many people hold the Tenor albums in high regard but I’m not one of them. Sample a few of his songs to feel out his style in case it clicks with you.

@Ghost were you the one excited about the New AAA reissues that are coming out soon of Louis Armstrong, Getz/Gilberto, etc? As a heads up they are all part of the target buy 2 get one free sale. They work out to $18 each.

Anyone ordered direct from Sam Records before? I placed an order 2 weeks ago which says 'Completed' in my account page but I've had no shipping email or tracking (which I paid for) details sent. I tried contacting through the online contact form a couple of days ago and have had no response. Just tried replying to my order email to see if I get a response that way. Just wondered if anyone had placed recent orders with similar delays?

I ordered from them direct a long time ago and it was fine. I’m pretty sure it is just one dude running the entire label. I did see something about COVID delays though...I tend to order their stuff from elsewhere since it’s expensive for me to ship to the US.

Thanks both. Not to worry, I just had an email response. At least he was honest, lol, he had just forgotten to mail my package, no worries, we're only human. Cheers.

Oh man...really jealous you got the Byrd Jazz. I just can’t find it in myself to pull the trigger on it but it looks beautiful. I love those Byrd in Paris records too. All great choices.

Yeah, I've treated myself because I've saved so much money during lockdown not going to the boozer every night. Hoping to keep up that change in lifestyle once we're back to normal too!
