The Blue Note Thread

Of course Somethin Else would be sold out by the time I got to add it to my cart. Think I'll give up on the MMJ releases

Yeah Im dying for a good quality somethin else but cant bring myself to support MMJ after they admitted their high prices was to get the money that otherwise would go to flippers.

Im just hopeful that seeing how successful Tone Poet is, Blue Note will eventually press these classics themselves in their own line.

Can you guys tell me why Marcus Miller doesn't get a lot of love on here?

My neighbour lent me his recent album "Laid Back" which is on Blue Note and I hadn't heard of him before but doing a search on here after listening to it didn't yield any results.

That album is really cool and sounds awesome cut at 45rpm. Really high quality mastering
In particular on this forum I don't know that Marcus has any Blue Note albums? But generally the BN crowd is going for the "classic" artists. I do like MM, but when I think of him, I hear that slap n' pop bass, which he is a MASTER at! I dig that but I've got to be in the mood, as it carries a heavy 80s vibe, and although I was digging 80s jazz back in the day, it's not my mainstay now. I really enjoyed what Marcus contributed to the Miles Doc on Netflix. Miles put a lot of trust in Marcus and he delivered big time. He's a supreme talent. He's got such a recognizible style I remember one day I was putting gas in my car and a guy came up blasting this funky bass music, and it wasn't some rap song, it was jazz. And I asked him, "Is that Marcus Miller"? He smiled, and said "yeah man!". It felt good to see another jazz fan out in the wild. That's rare.

Ah...the old FOMO tactic...At one point they were $35 I believe hah. To be somewhat fair, they likely only have the licensing to print a certain amount of albums, but their price gouging and crazy shipping costs have made me refuse to buy anything from them anymore.

A lot of people do complain about the records going out of stock really quickly but at this point, there are a lot of flippers buying them. I don't really know the way to get around that though outside of having a limit which they do I believe.
They might have even been $30 at the very beginning, I'm not sure. When I started buying them, which was during their pressing of the 33 series, they were $35 and they raised them to $40. Not long after that, they stopped distribution and started pulling all the bullshit.

Decided to continue the run of the Blue Note Challenges that I have been posting on Instagram by focusing on the BN-LA series from the early 1970's. Not as big of a choice compared to other series, but some stellar releases in there for sure:

Next set of BN Tone Poets are up for preorder. Note that the Turrentine & Henderson titles have been moved up to a May 29 release. No idea if they will hold to that or not - but I haven't seen preorders up for these four anywhere else:

Joe Henderson – The State of the Tenor: Live at the Village Vanguard, Volume 1 (Blue Note, 1985)TPTarget$27

I’d drop the live Blakey if I were you. It’s fine but I enjoy the other five much more.

There are better Hancock records form that era.

Look at that platter on his deck. What kind of turntable is he using?
I remember his being asked this question before. If memory serves me its a A.J. Conti Transcendence. A.J. Conti was a friend of Joe's. Its an absolute beast of a machine that starts at around $115,000

Heres a link to the specs - A.J. Conti Transcendence

Can you guys comment on the best sounding tone poets from the ones you've picked up so far? I'm trying to decide which ones to target next.

I've got all of them to date apart from the latest set to be released. In my opinion there isn't any 1 that sounds significantly better than the others, they just all sound great. I would base it more on which musician you prefer, without the worry that it wont sound as good as the others. Just my opinion though, others might have a different feel for them.
