If you think of it like a guitar, a cartridge is somewhat similar to a guitar pickup. Both turn mechanical vibrations into an electrical signal of the audio wave. If anything it's probably more of an engineering "correct" term compared to cartridge.

In case any of you US folks out there (and maybe elsewhere?) aren't aware, Audio Advisor emails out the below clearance newsletter every week.
