The Blue Note Thread

This is one of the stories I hope becomes more illuminated in one or more of the books I have. I would hope there is more to it than this, or that it's exaggerated, or at least some explanation from his perspective. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it is as shitty as it sounds, though. Lots of these guys were drug addicts that just did horrible shit to people. To reference the Miles autobiography again, he himself admits to repeatedly beating women, pimping women, and just using women in general for their money to get drugs.
Have you ever read Charles Mingus - Beneath the Underdog? That whole book reads as the biography of a pimp and sex pest. He hardly even mentions his music in there. One of the only jazz books/biographies that I haven't really enjoyed that much (and there been a lot of them!)

Wayne Shorter - ETC came in (Tone Poets) and wow, what a great record. Everyone is playing super tight and there's (i hate this term), vibe on the record that is really great.

If you haven't pulled the trigger on this, don't be afraid to!

For me this album is more interesting than Speak No Evil.

Funny thing, I love Mother Ship.

This reminds me of a documentary on a pride of lions I saw years ago on the discovery channel. It highlighted the rough life of older male lions. How they’re usually driven out by younger lions looking to takeover a pride and have their own cubs. They showed this older lion who was fighting for his life. Some younger upstarts came into his territory and were out for blood. He did his best, but was defeated. He licked his wounds and hobbled away in defeat. Usually, older male lions die after they’ve been ousted, but not this one. He remained solitary for a while. Still showing an agile prowess that beguiled his advanced age. He was still able to hunt on his own. The narrator quipped that he might be old, worn down, and defeated, but at the end of the day, he’s still a lion.

I feel that way about Lee Morgan. At his worst and lowest point, even when he was nodding off on dope, he was still Lee Morgan. At his worst, he was still better than most.

You know Lee wrote the Sidewinder on the toilet? True story. Love this vid of Bob Cranshaw talking about Lee and the how the record came about. Some nice clips of Lee playing too.

I forgot how slick that bass lick is.

There’s a difference between the two but I can’t quite put my finger

Still the best Tone Poet for me.

Hoping 2021 sees us with a The All Seeing Eye Tone Poet.
At least that was my wish while spinnin’ my late 70’s copy last night.
We need another Shorter Tone Poet.
Screw MMJ, get more Shorter in the public’s hands.

So far I rank 'em (out of the ones I have)

Face To Face
Etcetera
Contours
Born To Be Blue
Cornbread
Introducing Kenny Burrell
Hustlin'
Minor Move
Mr. Shing A Ling

Minor Move
music-wise is top 5 I think, but the cymbal hiss is annoying. I also love every single one of these. Mr. Shing-A-Ling is some funky groovin' soul music.

Also I really want to get Black Fire, Chant, and Clubhouse soon. And eventually Now He Sings, Now He Sobs.
The freakin' MMJ SRX releases and the new Tone Poet releases coming next month are takin' up all my vinyl funds though so those will have to wait .

I’m sort of at this weird point where I might just grab all the SRX presses coming out this year.
I sort of don’t like the thought of it, but hoping these will be the next best thing besids originals.
All depends on what I think of Blue Train and Moanin’.

I'm totally buying at least 9 of these new SRXs on release day. I don't have a great, AAA pressing of any of them, so the 2020 MMJ SRX campaign is a Godsend for me. Blue Train and Moanin' I have on the way, and I plan to order the other 8 on day one except for maybe Search For the New Land — I'll probably hold off on that one and hope it stays in stock for a few months. I kinda want to get Point of Departure on 33 as a priority before I get that one.

Also prefer JuJu to Speak No Evil.
Might even prefer Night Dreamer over both of them.
Shorter and Morgan are an amazing combo.

It is hard to make a firm statement here, but I think "Juju" is my favorite jazz record of all time and the fact that Night Dreamer, Juju, and Speak No Evil, were all recorded within a year is just mind-blowing.

Now He Sings is one of favorites from Tone Poet actually. Mine really sounds like a piano is set up in my living room. I love most of the TPs I have though--only missing a few. I'm missing the Gil Evans, State of the Tenor, Cassandra Wilson, Chant, Contours and Mr ShingaLing.
