Television

Watched the first episode of Years & Years, it's a weird blend of Black Mirror and Russel T. Davies sillyness (which I like). Looking forward to more of that.

With Game of Thrones gone (regardless of what you thought of the last season) the golden age of TV is effectively over. It was the last of its kind. There's still a lot of good TV out there but there's also major saturation. I haven't bothered watching a new Netflix show in like 2.5 years because there's a new popular one every week, and they just get cancelled before they're finished anyway.

I would urge you to reconsider for Russian Doll. Yes, Netflix is a bit ridiculous in their original content. But there are some diamonds amid all that rough. And Russian Doll was one of them.

I would respectfully have to disagree. GoT isn't even top tier television and we still have that being made like Better Call Saul, Succession, Barry, etc. etc..

Pamela Adlon's Better Things is still one of the most interesting things on TV. Since the production has cut ties with Louie, it's only gotten more complex. It's frustrating, opaque, doesn't explain anything, sometimes nothing happens at all...and yet it's a more humane & empathetic show than just about anything else on television.

And yes, her children's characters are AWFUL. But sometimes you get a glimmer of something even from them. It's a show where an episode will often feel like a series of vignettes that are only connected by the most tenuous threads, but somehow they still feel like they fit together in a way that's hard to explain. I don't know. Anybody else watching it?

Really? Not arguing, just the first time I've ever seen anyone assert this.

I think Succession has the ability to be top tier but like a lot of HBO shows, the first season is all about place setting. We'll see how the second season goes before I fully commit.. I do believe the other two are top tier though as are a number of other shows as well.

Another one of my favourites! It just keeps getting better! I still haven't seen the last three or four episodes, I am dying to watch them but promised a friend I'd watch them with her so I have to wait...

It can be a tough show to recommend to people just because somebody who casually drops in will be repulsed by a lot of the characters. But she's clearly got things on her mind, even if I can't always intuit exactly what they are.

I would agree that Netflix and HBO content, barring a few exceptions, has not been great recently, but FX, Amazon and Hulu have been on fire lately with tons of great stuff like Handmaid's Tale, Legion, Homecoming, Pose, Pen15, Catastrophe, What We Do In The Shadows, ACS, Better Things...the list goes on...

I would also say the end of The Americans was a bigger loss than the end of GoT.

I think it reflects the more realistic love/hate relationships of a family better than any drama...and it's also hilarious!

Please Like Me. Also Killing Eve and The Handmaid's Tale
I watched Handmaids Tale, have heard great things about Killing Eve and haven't even heard of Please Like Me. I will probably watch Killing Eve next.

As far as top dramas for me, in no order:
Deadwood
Breaking Bad
Mad Men
The Sopranos
The Wire

If pushed for a sixth I'll go with Six Feet Under.

I really burned out on Battlestar Galactica, not sure if I'll finish it. And I keep trying to go back to West Wing but never seem to be in the mood.

I would love for a show to come and unseat the Wire, I just dont think that will ever happen.

I agree.. even with a comparatively weak 5th season, I still think it's the best, by far. I really don't understand how people think Breaking Bad is even remotely close.. I mean, I think I know why, it's just ridiculous.
