The Blue Note Thread

I like those loud drums in #2 better but I do like both of them for different reasons...I think for certain records I prefer the instruments being panned but not as much in this one.
I couldn't agree more! The drums in the second one seem to hit harder, which is exactly what this track needs, but I think I prefer the way the horns sound in the first one at times.
The first one is MMJ SRX and the second one is original mono

It's interesting to hear how big the differences are though. I have been having a lot of internal conflict on how I feel about remasters lately haha. On one hand, I feel like it was recorded a certain way by RVG so that should be maintained to respect the artist's and engineer's vision. On the other hand, the separation between instruments can be really nice on the more modern remasters and I can't always afford old pressings...

In an ideal world, I would have mint copies of the original in just about every case. It's really just down to which ones can be found affordable. The increased costs of some audiophile reissues really help increase the ceiling for what I'm willing to pay for some originals, though. For instance, I got the earlier pressing of my two samples in NM condition for less than the newer pressing cost.

Yea--it really depends on the album since some are WELL beyond my reach financially and I wouldn't even want to spend that on a copy to be honest. I've been streaming FLAC more and it is curbing my vinyl purchasing a little but still nothing like throwing a record on.

Although people were working with what they had at the time. RVG could have possibly approved of what happened as a result of modern technology.

Right, that's the other rub haha. If he had access to today's technology, it may very well have sounded like a Kevin Gray remaster. I just think it's kinda cool to have an old album from 60 years ago and listen to how it was meant to sound at that very moment in time. And for a Blakey album, it feels like a shame to hide the drums in the background.
