It’s been a throwback year for me. Nearly all my top albums are either from slightly older acts or are based in/inspired by the 90’s in some way. Don’t really know if that says something about me and my midlife crisis or the current era of popular culture and its nostalgia. Not that much great hip hop this year either, but a year pretty much dominated by great guitar based rock and folksy americana. Lucero are the great unsung heroes of 2023 in my book, setting the tone for the entire year with the poignant opening track “One Last F.U” from their great “return to form album” from way back in January. And Jason Isbell released his best album to date and cemented himself as one of the greatest songwriters if his generation. And also, this is a year were I’ve found myself listening to individual songs more than full albums. I’ve got a handful of great playlists packed with excellent songs, but often picked from albums that didn’t quite live up to my expectations.
So, anyway:

Almost ready to finalize mine. Over the past couple weeks I've gone through and listened to every album I had in my top 60. (I had covid so there wasn't much else to do for awhile).
