Vinyl Me Please Essentials

It would be weird to go from hospice to confessions to there's a riot goin on though

So one or two of these are probably incorrect

December is often the most "sophisticated" and older album, often taking older staples of R&B and soul (Aretha, Mavis, Nina, Billie).. the only exceptions were Miles Davis (which still fits because it's an older album from a classic in jazz) and Nils Frahm

Usher, Sade, or Brandy all have a chance for November, so I feel like we probably don't have December and maybe not October, but that antlers album is a bit too coincidental

Is it though? The album was released this year and pressings have been delayed a lot. Could be a case that it was delayed until now.

When did preorders for other varients come... Because of the JUST came then yeah it just so happens to be a beloved indie rock/dream pop act that came out with a worshipped 3rd album from the one year they get most of the indie albums they've done... In a month where the clues are 3 and 2000s indie

Looks like the new album was originally released on March 21 of this year. I love Hospice but I just don’t see it as an essential release. That doesn’t mean it won’t be but I am fairly certain it would likely be their most least popular release of 2021. TBH, I think that will likely be the case with whatever they choose that fits these clues. I doubt it’s Antlers or Grizzly Bears as why release exclusives so far in advance of the Announcement, they would be much smarter to release all at roughly the same time.

True

Though the only exclusive for QOTSA (though I dunno if I should count that non QOTSA album as one) was released before even soft bulletin was announced

I guess I can find a lot more examples where they were released at roughly the same time than ones where they were released month(s) prior.

So if we are going Indie 3rd albums from the 00's, the likeliest list of albums is:

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
The Antlers - Hospice
Sufjan Stevens - Michigan
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
The Wrens - The Meadowlands (this is my hope)
The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz

I'm not including 2010 in the list and of course there are a lot of other indie bands with 3rd albums, but none that strike me as "Essentials" unless I'm clearly missing something big.

Could it be non-American? You’d hope that at some stage they’d realise that there’s plenty of good European guitar music…

Portugal. The Man's Censored Colors fits (third album, came out in 2008), although maybe I just have them on the brain lately because I had a different album of theirs as a swaption for the N&G AOTM.

It's a good album and long out of print, although maybe not big enough to make waves as an Essentials. If PTM ever got the VMP treatment, it'd probably be an album like Satanic Satanist or Evil Friends.

He wants Bloc Party's Intimacy or Maximo Park's Quicken the Heart

Intimacy is a great album, I’d bite their hand off it it was up! Maximo Park, they had that one good song once right?

It’s a point way beyond just this month though because not every indie month is limited to third albums.

It's been so long since I listened to Intimacy, I should give it a relisten.

Maximo Park's first album has some real classics on it and absolutely slaps. Everything since? Not so much.

I guess Tyrannosaurus Hives would give you Swedish rock. That was a big album in the States for a bit when it came out.
