Hey friends, I don' think I've seen a thread for what is clumsily titled "World Music".

So lets create a dedicated place to exchange recommendations and favorite pressings.

So what conversations belong in here?

Anything pertaining to:

• African music
• Afro-cuban music
• Latin music
• Brazlian music
• Asian music
• Under the sea music
• Moon music

Seriously, just anything that's outside the Anglo-English domain.

To kick things off, I'll ask a question.

If I enjoy Orchestra Baobab's "Specialist In All Styles" what should I check out next from their catalogue or any adjacent artists?

Also really enjoying this posthumous Ali Farka Toure which is made up of unreleased cuts from Ali & Toumani which to me is just a sublime and perfect album. Thinking of picking up the record.

FYI:

World Music thread is the place. But given Baobab are one of my all-time favourite bands I have to respond to you @Ghost here. In terms of their stuff, both Mouhamadou Bamba and Si Bou Odja recently got reissued and are just fabulous (there's a CD compilation Bamba that collects the two). In terms of other things from Senegal, Analog Africa had a great compilation Senegal 70 a while ago. My other favourite Senegalese band is Star Band de Dakar. Most of their originals go for crazy money (I'm still missing a few and didn't bid for them recently on Ebay as they were so pricey) but Ostinato did a decent one-disc compilation recently.

Once you go further than that and into all of West Africa, there's so much to choose from. Of course, I'd recommend my beloved Poly-Rythmo. Check out Vodoun Effect or Le Sato. Every country has one or two absolute superstars - check out Rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs from Mali, singers such as K Frimpong, Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor from Ghana (and compilations such as Afrobeat Airways and Borga Revolution), Guinea there's Balla et ses Balladins and Camayenne Sofa, Benin has Black Santiago and Gnonnas Pedro, both Analog Africa and Ostinato did wonderful compilations from Cabo Verde etc etc.

Enjoy!
