Pre-Order Thread

Well since its Friday and I don't want to do any work and since you asked:

I have AFTP on Cassette, CD and a digital copy - I don't need a copy of this on vinyl.
I want it but I don't NEED it.

Quite frankly, I don't NEED any vinyl by even my most favorite artist.
The mere fact I can afford to participate in this hobby speaks to how crazy fortunate I am in comparison to the average person.

Being very conscious of the fact that every time I throw $20+ dollars at something so weirdly bourgeois and twee as a vinyl record - and because I can listen to Binky the Doormat in the round on three other separate mediums - I'm not going to grab a copy just to have a copy on vinyl.

If I'm going to throw money that could (should?) be going to my sons' college fund or something of actual and real value - there's going to be some very careful curation before I just hand it over the cash.

Now, lets do a thought exercise: Say I buy the black vinyl reissue, just to have it. One day, I'm going to walk into the record store and an OG/1st Press is going to be on the wall. Its AFTP - I cant just let that just hang there - that has to come home with me. (I know how stupid that is - but at least I can recognize my own pathology). So, knowing that is what is going to happen - I'm not settling for something lesser.

My preference is to exercise some self restraint and patience in favor of carefully curating my collection.

Now, I'm also a realist (and maybe a little bit of a nihilist if I'm being honest) and I know that the OG copy is likely to never fall into my lap - so the next best thing (in my curation model) is a great sounding limited edition pressing. For that reason I try to acquire the most limited colored pressings.

But that's me.
I like a challenge and am too painfully aware of how ridiculous this hobby really is when I put a critical eye on it.
But I'm also the guy that (aside from pre-orders) doesn't: buy on-line, from big box retailers or Amazon.
I buy from the artist, independent record stores, in store and make the occasional PIF acquisition (shout out to the best thread going).

I know that places a significant degree of difficulty on putting together a seriously quality collection of vinyl - but that kind of the point for me.

That's why I'm being snobby - since you asked.

P.S. That and because I'm still butt-hurt that I got F'd on pre-order by Stipe and Co. ;)

I appreciate your explanation. Your restraint is admirable. I’m more of a cheap volume buyer with an appetite for VG records (because $7-$14 is my ideal price point).

I’ve been mostly off the streaming train for a while and still regularly buy blind (especially 50s-70s jazz, which I’m usually only moved by on vinyl for some reason).

As for my other irrational traits, I can’t get myself to sell unwanted records online because I’m too afraid of negative feedback, so instead I just trade them in at my local for 1/3 of their market value. And I’m yet to invest on a cleaning method beyond a brush and some liquid. I’ll see myself out now so people can preorder $45 single LPs!

The miser in me cant do this.
It hurts more than it does to get really honest with myself and pass on a release I want.

With the PIFthread, I feel like I'm getting full value when I decide a release/pressing has to go because its claim one/PIF one. (Again - shout to the PIF thread - everyone should get over to the PIF thread if you aren't there already).

At $50.07 USD to purchase and have shipped to me, I reckon I'm just gonna have to save this picture to my hard drive and pull it up to look at while I stream the album instead.

And now for something completely different..... (and not vinyl):

I was so surprised seeing Jim Henson stuff in the first few episodes. Also there's 0 chance that pulled cartoon criticizing media monopolies is on this right?

Edit: that cartoon wasn't until the 90's so not on it for sure.

Yeah, my reasoning is that I’m helping a small local business. Though that’s really a way to rationalize my own anxieties.

As for the PIF thread, I’ve also been too afraid to join. Maybe if I start regularly perusing it and see something that I just can’t miss, that might cause me to get over my fears/laziness.

Oh, I hope you'll make your way over - it's an extra special corner of the internet!

I definitely found it a bit daunting at first, but am glad to be there - even when not giving or getting anything.

@bettim84 - Fear is the mind killer - get yourself over there!

There's nothing to be afraid of - its basically a record swap meet with collectors you can trust.

Right now - there's a Hat (not going to explain that - you have to get over there to figure it out) for a pristine copy of VMP's Doors S/T release.
If you claimed that - the owner ships it to you media mail at their expense.

Your only obligation would be to find a release of your own to offer up to anyone on the thread in return.
If someone claims your offer - you send it via media mail them.

BOOM - you just swapped a record you didn't want for one you do.
And - you aren't out any $$ on the transaction b/c you didn't pay for having the The Doors shipped to you/
And - you didn't take a bath on the record you offered.

Its kind of a no-brainer.

Fear is the mind killer

I must not fear.
Fear is the PIF-killer.
Fear is the little-warp that brings total obliteration.
I will play through my fear.
I will permit the needle to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner groove to see its distortion.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only rockin' tunes will remain.

From now on you shall be known as "@LeSamourai Muad'Dib".

Dang I love this album and am glad it’s getting another press. Wasn’t this part of a numero club and they said it would never be pressed again or did I make that up? Either way I’ve had that version in my wantlist and it’s always hovered in the 100+ range.
I knew I wasn’t crazy

The records won’t be available in stores, and Numero won’t be repress them or issue them on CD.

I knew I wasn’t crazy

…and yet here we are. After a decade plus of purchasing “RSD Exclusives” I’ve learned to take even the best labels/artists with a grain of salt when they make declarative statements like this. I usually operate under the assumption that it’s better for more people to have the opportunity to purchase music than less but I could understand feeling a bit bamboozled by this when the label is using it to stoke FOMO.
