Political Discussion

Trump said over the weekend that "if they have the sniffles we mark them as tested when in reality they will be 100% recovered in a day or two"

This statement was made in relation to the White House in opposition of additional funding for the CDC, testing and contract tracing. Which Trump want's removed from the bill. This is one of the rare situations where Trump and the Republicans in the Senate are not aligned.

Surprise surprise.

They blocked Obama's nominee more than a year out from election because it was an election year and a liberal jude "would destroy the foundation of our democracy". Now, posed with the possibility they could have a vacancy before January, they are vowing that they must fill that vacancy. Even if it's after the election and Trump loses. The are signaling that they will confirm Trump's nominee between the election and the day in January the the presidency changes hands.

What hypocrites.

The local news is full of reports of small local business who were denied their PPP loan because of a mistake on the form. Many of these small businesses do not have the money to pay an accounting $1,000 an hour to fill out the forms for them. Thus they filled out the forms themselves.

One of the most common issues is with people using commas instead of decimal points in their estimated income. In other parts of the world, commas are the standard for the separation of dollars and cents instead of decimal points. And this error has hit immigrants especially hard.

For example, a restaurant listed their estimated income as $350000,00. They meant $350,000.00. But the program interpreted it as $35 Million and said they didn't qualify.

They appealed the decision, but even though it was an obvious mistake, they lost the appeal because the program does not allow you to make adjustments to your estimated income. Because of that technicality, they were denied again.

The restaurant is likely going under because of this error. And since the story aired on the local news last week, more than 25 other local small businesses came forward saying they had the same issue.

I work in a financial institution and while this is a terrible situation for these business owners, most modern "scanning programs" can be set up in a few ways. When dealing with loans of large dollar amounts it's somewhat common to set it up as a "3 digit" read, meaning, it will automatically assume where the comma will go reading 3 digits from the end and picking up the decimal as the "cents" break. That being said, I gotta be honest, having to have physically go eyeball "red flags" in the past, most systems would have picked up the comma as a decimal, it doesn't have that level of detail to distinguish between the two unless they're being entered manually..........which is an entirely different, and concerning, can of worms.

I have an instinctive distaste for “accelerationism” as a political ethos, but I do have to say that I think a lame duck SC confirmation by Trump & McConnell might be just the thing to “break the fever” (to coin a phrase) of centrist, institutionalist liberals (who would otherwise presumably be riding high off a Biden win and feverishly anticipating getting together with Republicans of good will to negotiate a Grand Bargain) and get real momentum behind much-needed majoritarian reforms like court-packing, killing the filibuster for good and all, statehood for DC/PR, etc.

Yeah, but how many years will that take before the SC moves back from the right?

More escalation with China
Make no mistake, the BIG CHEESE is in between a rock and a hard place right now and he knows it, he's needing to "bend" to the reality of his stance on COVID causing him major disapproval, but he needs to constantly through his base a bone with the "Patriotic" BS, which is what this is. It's funny how he took Putin at his word about interference when there was proof, but now China's embassy within the US is going to run off with our "private information".

There is a great deal of tension between the left and the right on capitol hill right now over expiring expanded unemployment benefits and another stimulus package.

AOC has been particular vocal about extending expanded unemployment benefits. She has been citing the high rent in areas like NY where she represents means a mass homelessness crisis is coming if we don't act now to extend the expanded unemployment.

GOP lawmaking Ted Yoho approached her yesterday and told her that her views on unemployment were "disgusting". AOC said he was being rude where Ted Yaho reportedly walked off saying "fucking bitch". The altercation was overheard by a member of the press who reported on it.

The GOP is mostly against extended the expanded unemployment. They are against hands ots calling it socialist policies. Instead of handouts and a safety support net, they want to get people back to work. They feel that this can be done with payroll tax cuts for businesses and providing job training programs to help people find new careers. All of this does not address the immediate need of money to avoid eviction and likely lands many people into lower paying jobs with are not sustainable for covering the costs of living.

When it comes to a stimulus, the left wants to send out another check. The GOP is either completely against this, or for those who are on board for another stimulus, are arguing over how much the stimulus should include and the qualifications for getting it. They of course want the check to be less than that the left is asking for. They also want qualifications for getting it so it is not a blanket stimulus across the board for anyone making under X amount. Essentially it comes down too that if you are in a blue state with a high cost of living they don't want to bail you out. If you are in a red state and your work has been impacted they want to send you a check. They are trying to avoid the "blue state bailout" with this stimulus. Those in the GOP against another stimulus, which is the majority of the GOP party, they would rather stimulate the economy with tax cuts vs stimulus checks. But with some of the GOP on board for another stimulus check, if they could ever reach an agreement with the left there would be enough votes for it to pass. I just don't see the GOP budging on their demands and the left would likely have to cave to get something done half ass.
