Needles & Grooves AoTM /// Vol. 8 - February 2020 /// Ibeyi - Ash

They didn't stop for the holidays, a lot of trains got cancelled, other got added but communication was terrible. We had a train to go to Bordeaux that was half-empty while some people couldn't find a way to go to see their family and spent Christmas alone. It's a shit show and I don't see the government nor the parties to try to find a solution to this situation.

Yeah protracted public transport strikes are a nightmare.

But what I will say is, that as much as we might mock you for it, your unionisation and willingness to strike is a strength. The Americanisation of our labour market has absolute annihilated all workers rights and unless you are a skilled worker with bargaining power you are fucked in terms of pay, certainty of either employment or hours and you can forget about future planning or pensions!

Yup, you're right. I don't really appreciate unions to be honest. I appreciate what they did and how they did in the past but not anymore. Some unions are just like any other party. It's a bit disappointing. Well! Stop talking about politics! We are here for Bush (not the idiot, the band)!

A little detour aka The AotM that could never have been

The record I'm gonna post about would never have been able to be eligible for AotM because it sadly never received a vinyl release, and neither did the vast majority of the discography of Mano Solo. It's a shame really, but since @Teeeee wanted to know more about "chanson française", this right here is one of my favourite record from the "nouvelle chanson française" that emerged in the 90s.

La Marche is another record that I associate very much with my mom and my childhood, as my mother is a huge fan of this scene from the 90s. There are musical influences from latin music, great trumpet and percussions, and both the drama and the joy resonate in the lyrics and in the strengh Mano Solo puts into his singing.

He sadly passed almost 10 years ago from AIDS, after 20 years of a career marked with solidarity with many many causes.

It is one of his best record, because this acts for me as a "best of" and the intensity of the live recording is amazing.

This one is missing :

The gardens were full of them,
there were lots in the courtyards,
little toddlers, little Parisians.
And even little pebbles,
both hands at the bottom of the pockets,
who stare at you in the corner, with the heads of clever little ones.
So I told you, come on cute
come on let's make one,
we will hold it by the hand, the three of us will have a good laugh.
But that's where you said that

Life is not cake and we won't make old bones,
we will not make brats to yell at them aloud
that life is not cake.

Even if I don't make a living
and even if I have AIDS,
I don't want to be cut off,
I say to myself "Yeah, why not".
I would like to bite in a child's pink cheeks,
I would say "hi my little guy",
he would say "hi dad!"
I'll take her to do bullshit,
all the stuff that is not allowed,
how to seduce the girls,
how do we party.
But that's where you said that

Life it's not cake and we won't make old bones,
we will not make brats to yell at them aloud
that life is not cake.

Me you see before I die,
I would like to let snot run from a little nose,
a little bit of eternity.
You tell me that this is all fantasies
and I find it hard to contradict you
but I would still like to leave a trace
before leaving, before dying.
And even if life is not easy
and we’ll not make brats to yell at them out loud
that life is not cake.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM! (First listen happening now).

But this isn't the "usual" french music I enjoy. The lyric driven pop ye-ye stuff. What was it called? Anyway, this isn't that, right? I'm hearing something else. That I love a ton.

Yeah, that's why I wrote earlier that "chanson française" is hard to define other than "lyrics driven", musically it can be all over the place depending on the artists and the eras. It would be easier to know of the artist and songs you already love to expand on that.

Pop yé-yé is a subgenre of "chanson française" in itself in my book. But maybe my definition of "chanson française" is too broad ? :)

Yep, I'll go find the artists I own that I'm loving. You all are the best! Thank you for escorting me through this thread, just as @Goatfish escorted me through metal.

@Teeeee : Some of the ultimates yéyé songs of all time, according to me :

I have this album and adore it:

I have lots o' Edith Piaf, duh. But if there is a "must have" of hers, please tell me and I will be sure to get it. There is so much of her stuff out there, deservedly, but it gets overwhelming how much stuff you can find by here.

I also have:

France Gall - Babacar
Several Jacques Brel -3 or 4 different ones (also gets overwhelming so if there is something of his that is a must have, let me know)
George Chelon
Serge Gainsbourg - L'Homme A Tete De Chou, Bonnie and Clyde, Trois Et Quartre
Maurice Chevalier - Portrait of, This Is
La Planete Sauvage soundtrack - Effing LOVE this thing
Sylvie Vartan
Higelin - Alertez Les Bebes
Mireille Mathieu
Gilbert Becaud - a few different, no idea what lol
Francoise Hardy - Star, The Yeh Yeh Girl from Paris
Jean Giraudoux - Pages Choisies
Benjamin Biolay - Volver

How'd I do? What did I miss?
