Movies

Still a good handful more to watch, but Drive My Car is probably my favorite movie of 2021. Just fantastic.
What's wild is that it's not even the best foreign film of 2021...y'all probably ain't seen Petite Maman yet. France sticky pudding'd up so hard not submitting it for Oscar consideration.

I loved both films, but I'll gladly take the 72 minute film that had just as much to say about grieving than the 3 hour film that did so while giving us like 45 minutes of table readings of Uncle Vanya.

gonna hide now, before you all kill me ;p

Definitely more than a handful of foreign films I still need to see. I was lamenting earlier today about how hard it is to see these movies this year; Like 5 theaters showing Drive My Car, no distributor for Petite Maman (I think France was right in submitting Titane btw, that's sticking to your guns), no wide release for Parallel Mothers, super late season releases for Flee, and TWPitW.. it sucks these movies are so hard to see!!

Anyway, I loved the Uncle Vanya bits, and a good long slow burn. Made the final 20 or so minutes so much more heavy hitting IMO.

Neon owns Petite Maman...it should be out this year sometime.

Yeah, she’s really into horror films so I’m trying to get her to go through more of the classics than all the gore porn movies that have recently come out. We’re going to watch Alien next. I also told her I’d like her to watch other Kubrick films like 2001 and eventually A Clockwork Orange.

Oldest kid wanted to watch The Shining last night. Still holds up. Is Dr Sleep any good?
I actually think Doctor Sleep is really good, but it has the difficult task of attempting to reconcile the differences between The Shining the film and The Shining the novel, which is a tall order. The Director’s Cut is the way to go.

Rebecca Ferguson MVP.

Just watched Hotel Poseidon on Arrow streaming on a whim, and wow... Not something many will find enjoyable, but I really dug it.

Super surreal, decrepit, and grimly humored. I was vibing with it from the beginning, but it clinched an easy win with me by featuring a live music scene that introduced me to Belgian post-metallers Pothamus and indie pop band Blackie & Oohoos.

There's a couple film festival trailers on YouTube, but I'm choosing not to post them here, not because I feel they spoil anything (there's not much to spoil, considering the movie lacks a true narrative). I just feel they set up the wrong kind of expectations for the energy of the film, which is actually quite placid.

Has there been any No Time To Die discussions yet? Just finished watching it and still absorbing what I watched. I think I liked it, a nice mix of story, action and reveals. I wish I had watched a recap of the previous ones first though.
