DAY 13 - It’s a conversation

View attachment 46673

R.E.M.'s Monster is as loved as it is derided, possibly their most divisive album.
So when it was reissued with a second LP of a COMPLETELY different mix, I had to have it. I was keen to hear an album I love so much in a new way.
And, interestingly, so were a lot of my friends. Facebook threads, text messages, e-mails, phone calls, video chats of playing "spot the difference" from song to song.
Proof positive that there are still people who pay attention to what they are hearing and that it's not background noise.
Music DOES matter... even if they removed the fucking tremolo from "What's The Frequency Kenneth" which still bugs the shit out of me... WHY WOULD YOU REMOVE A HOOK???

Playing my own spot the difference today to see if I missed anything since the last time.

I swear it’s the current reissue of Monster that’s responsible for my screeching tinnitus.

Day 14 - mature

Afrosound of Colombia

A fantastic compilation of some of the more obscure songs from Discos Fuentes by one of my favourite small labels, Vampi Soul from Madrid, with a strong focus on the genius that is Fruko. Some of the songs get a little bit, well, pornographic, which I guess is in keeping with the often v cheesecake covers on these albums. I thought my girlfriend and daughter had left this morning but they hadn't so had to swipe this off when they burst back in...

Day 14: Rated M for mature

So I took this as mature musically , not sweary bitchrap stuff, which seems quite immature to me , so I can’t think of anything more mature than this wonderful album that modernised trad English folk from the 17th century and booted it up the arse ...and born out of tragedy too,,stunning work.. .I also don’t think I’d have given this time of day 20 years ago ..so I’m definitely maturing finally

Fairport Convention “Liege & Lief” 1969

Yes this is an album that took me ages to fully appreciate. Hard to grasp what they were going for if you’re 15 I guess. No disrespect for 15year old listeners, for me albums like Aja, Hejira and this are decidedly adult albums in tone and lyrical content

Day 14: Rated M for mature

Prince - Purple Rain

Filth, purest filth, and that’s why we love him!

And I know, it’s a picture disc, stop wittering, we were all young and foolish once and this actually sounds really good.

PS: It seems me and @Murfocakes has similar thoughts today. I’d better go find a psychiatrist...

PPS: There is no difference between side A and B looks wise so I just played side B first 🤦🏻

My kids are in next door so they’re not hearing Head at the minute thankfully. Sometimes I’ll be driving in the car with them and then have to start talking loudly as I realise the next bit has smutty talk. I’m constantly talking about Bowie and Prince so the kids I teach even know I’m obsessed with them. This was my 40th birthday cake

haha yeah! Prince is definitely not kiddie friendly. Was it not Darling Nikki that enraged Tipper Gore so and led to the daft sticker that just made me want albums I otherwise wouldn’t have when I was a kid.

I listened to loads of unfiltered Bowie as a kid though and I turned out just fine......

LOVE that cake though, well played!

Day 14 - Rated M for mature

Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

I chose this one for several reasons. First and foremost because it's one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time, but also because it fits this theme in several ways. Obviously the lyrics are rated M, so no listening to this one with the kids around. But compared to other hip hop being released in '99, this "conscious hip hop" album is much more mature in it's themes and lyrics. Lastly, this has got to be the biggest parental advisory sticker I've ever seen on a record haha

Day 14 - Grown Ass

not too long ago on NPR I heard an interview with a black transexual male. To be honest, I don’t remember what the piece was about but something stuck out to me. This man who is clearly on the margins of society as a whole, who couldn’t possibly fit the definition of “other” more completely, talked about having to check his privilege. I’ve been chewing on that for a bit now. It even lead to a less than pleasant (for me) exchange in the COVID thread here because I’ve been grappling with how powerful a representation that statement is in regards to exactly how divided our world has become...

this leads me to playing this album today. There’s one of them damn Tipper Gore by way of Prince Explicit Labels marring what is a powerful image. So check in what I am sure is the intent of the day’s theme.

but... this record is more... it’s a non binary black male coming to terms with his experience. The violence and hate of a society directed towards him. It is at times graphic and alarming. All the while he rejects the idea of otherness. He refuse to accept what society deems as masculine. He will not be defined by a society that refuses to accept his simple humanity.

however, as has been the case with his work under the Blood Orange moniker, Devonte Hynes continues a theme of creating community through out the album. It’s even there in the complex movement between soulful tracks to ambient tracks to songs that will light up a dance floor.

I admire the maturity of Hynes and his commitment despite all the ugly he has experienced and unfortunately probably will experience. He is an important and in my opinion, woefully under appreciated voice.

Day 13: An album that feels conversational

Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman

This album reaches its zenith during "Father and Son", an imagined conversation between the two characters, but several other tunes, like the warnings/pleadings of "Wild World" and the song-to-myself "Miles From Nowhere", also feel like really intimate conversations.

From what I remember the warning stickers actually increased sales
Hell yeah , I pretty much bought every tape/cd that had on on in the 90’s. If I remember the one 1st was 2 live crew. At the time they were trying to ban a lot these albums altogether

Day 14: Rated M For Mature

Digital Underground ‎– Sex Packets (BCM Records, 1990 First Pressing)

I decided to go for a bit of a rap-comedy album today. Digital Underground was an American alternative hip hop group from Oakland, California that would change their line-up with the release of each album. Famously they launched the career of member Tupac Shakur, who appeared on their 'Same Song' track. 'Sex Packets' is their debut album, released in 1990, and was successful mainly due to some hit singles emerging from it, including 'The Humpty Dance' which peaked at No.11 on the Billboard top 100 chart. One of the group leaders, Shock G, used an alter ego 'Humpty Hump' and used humorous but X-rated lyrics which rhymed incredibly well. It's certainly an oddity and arguably an album which isn't to be taken seriously (as they didn't take themselves seriously either).
