February 2021 Challenge (& Raffle)

Mon 8 – You should have been there
Reminisce about your best ever gig, and play a record by that band.

Sigur Rós - ( )

Seeing SR live was one of those experiences that left me wondering if what I was feeling at that concert was what I was supposed to be feeling every week at church. (Also, this continues the no cover trend for today, as I just got this as a great PIF from @AnthonyI, who was kind enough to provide a sticker of the art I'll stick on a blank jacket!)

Day 12 - Moneybags

Checking in with the other official Frank Ocean pressing ($551.41). The amount of vinyl money Frank loses on out on is absurd. Basically every time I’m in my LRS I see someone asking about Frank Ocean vinyl and dropping $40 on a bootleg.

Also, I learned my highest ticket item is the first pressing of the Grateful Dead Cornell boxset. I also gave out two copies of that as wedding gifts the summer that was out. What a great wedding guest I am!

Fri 12 – Moneybags
Spin the single disc you have with the highest max value on Cogs.

Someone already took Blond, so next in line is:

The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics!!!
(Max price: $592.89)

This copy is torn up pretty good, no way would this ever go for that much. It’s also got scribbling on the cover that -despite buying this at a shop in the PNW where the band would visit sometimes- is unfortunately not autographs from the band.

It was released on this day in 1967, and is my pick for best ever single. Play yours.

Not just a timeless single, but a timeless song that's bridged genres.

Most of you are probably unfamiliar with the Bohemian Vendetta version. Highly recommended...

Radiohead - “Paranoid Android”

I think the TV just happened to be on at a friend’s house when MTV premiered the “Paranoid Android” video and the insane animation along with the epic multi-part structure of the song had everyone in the room stunned. When it was over, we weren’t sure if what we had seen was real and it was a while before I heard it again.

Cool category today, I haven’t really thought about it too deeply before. With that said, this is probably a top five single for me. It exudes so much joy in music; whether you make it or listen to it.

”...and with a voice like Ella’s ringin’ out, there’s no way the band can lose.”

I'm not much into collecting singles, but I do have a record with a whole bunch of #1 hits from the 60's and 70's.

St Vincent - MASSeduction
Los Ageless

I dont think I could ever pick just one song to be my favorite song ever, But this is without a doubt up there! Easily my favorite song of the 2010s and I think I will come back to this album and song for the rest of my life. It's a HUGE earworm, its st Vincent at her coolest and its emotional captivating

Day 13 - SFF

The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever / Magical Mystery Tour
Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - Dancing In The Street

Well, I guess I *had* to play Strawberry Fields Forever. For me it's perfect, not least as it has two of the best songs from one of the best groups. Still incredible to me that it's one of their few singles not to make it to number one. I would have loved to have been alive in 1967 to have experienced the rush of this first hand.

But I also thought I'd play something else and my mind immediately went to Dancing In The Street, which is such an immense (and important) song. And while looking through my 7s I found the fabulous original double 7 EP of Magical Mystery Tour with I Am The Walrus on others. (Side note - I used to sing this to my kids as a bedtime story and one day on Kendal high street my 5-year-old son shouted out, to total bemusement of the passers-by: "Boy, you've been a naughty girl, you let your knickers down!" Proud Dad moment). Three wonderful singles, anyway...

David Bowie - Station to Station

I have a hard time picking favorites, so today I decided to limit myself to great singles that soundtracked historically-inaccurate dance scenes scenes set in Medieval England in movies featuring the actors who played the Joker and Vision, which left me with "Golden Years."
